Yuri Manga

Yen Press has announced Common-Sense Monster, about a girl who finds her friend is actually a monsterwho blens in with humans, so she asks her to teach her to act “normal.”

Via YNN Staffer Matt Marcus, CandleA, the Kadokawa Imprint that currently carries Tsukuritai Onna to Tabetai Onna, Wicked Spot and Hime Miko to Hime Kishi, now is getting Onni ‘tte Yonde mo Iimasuka? (オンニって呼んでもいいですか？) by Hanakage Alt! Watch for this story about an idol and her fan later this month.

Via Comic Natalie, we have a tantalizing sample in Japanese of Watanuki Hiroya’s Scifi Yuri about a terrible alien and useless robot, Aliens (エイリアンズ), with the provocative tagline: “We are not alone in the universe. But we are alone in this world.” Volume 1 is available now, in Japan.

Just a reminder that No.9 has a line of Yuri works, many of them available on Bookwalker. Check out their site and click “Other stores” on any book that looks good to get the full listing of where they can be found.

While flitting around No. 9’s Bookwalker listing, I found this anthology – Sousaku Yuri Fesuta Anthology Shiro-gun no Sora ni Kimi o Kaite iru. (創作百合フェスタアンソロジー 白群の空に君を描いている。) This includes a number of names we’re familiar with here, like Kodama Naoko, as contributors.

From Yuri Navi, we have Rakuen No Kisetsu (楽園の季節) a sweaty hot popsicle-eating summer Yuri. This one-shot can be read in Japanese on Comic Days.

Via Sr. YNN Corespondent Sean Gaffney, Joanna Cayanan has the news that Yodogawa, creator of Monthly in the Garden with My Landlord, has a new manga on Kadocomi,  Neko ni Hakuchō, Hotaru ni Koban (猫に白鳥、蛍に小判). The first chapter introduces us to a teacher and a student.

Via Sr. Correspondent Ashley, the Kickstarter for STARWARD LOVERS, a “tokusatsu-inspired f/f action romance comic about longing and space aliens” has already made it’s initial goal and has 27 days to go! They got me at “all-lesbian team of secret agents.” ^_^

Lauren Orsini reviews the world premiere of This Monster Wants to Eat Me anime on ANN. It’s such a great series and the trailer and this review have me stoked for the series.

Via Animate Times, we have character designs for the upcoming workplace comedy Egao no Taenai Bassho desu., (笑顔のたえない職場です。) known as A Mangaka’s Weirdly Wondeful Workplace in in English, based on the manga by Kuzushiro.

Via YNN Correspondent KatGrrrl, The UK is getting The Executioner and Her Way of Life Collection on Blu-Ray.

ANN’s Ken IIkura-Gross reports on  20th anniversary of the My-Otome series, the sequel to My HiME. Those have both been extensively reviewed here on Okazu, along with the adjacent OVAs, manga and CDs.

Via Disc-connected on Bluesky, Maedchen in Uniform, one of the oldest lesbian movies extant, is getting a release on Blu Ray from KinoLorber, as part of their KinoClassics line. I know I have watched it, but apparently never reviewed it here.

We’ll finish up with the US team for Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Super Live streaming free on Youtube! Even if Sailor Moon is not your Jam, check it out. It’s sparkly fun.

A very happy birthday month to all of you! Yuricon and Okazu were both born in August and this year, the 24th anniversary of Yuricon, we are going to be launching a brand new look!  All of the designs have been approved, Okazu Patrons and Supporters got to see some previews, feedback has been really positive. This will be the 5th design for Yuricon, 7th overall if we include it’s predecessor AniLesboCon. I hand coded the first three iterations, had the next three built for me and now am entrusting this full rebuild to the incredibly talented team of Katy and Chris at Hand Design Co..  It’s gonna be a big birthday gift to Yuricon for it’s 25th year. ^_^

Yuri Anime

Roll Over and Die: I Will Fight For An Ordinary Life With My Love And My Cursed Sword anime has announced staff, cast and posted a trail, says ANN’s Alex Mateo.

Creator of This Monster Wants To Eat You, Naekawa Sai, is a guest of Otakon this year and will be promoting the upcoming anime for the series. 

Otakon also has cast and staff from Rock Is A Lady’s Modesty as guests this year, so it’ll be a good year for Yuri fans. Adrian Hazra has the details.

Yuri Manga

Manga Mavericks presents Hanakage Alt’s Sempai no Kouhai in English, as one complete volume!

Ikuta Hana, whose Bakumatsu souls reborn into modern high school girls manga have fascinated me, has a new volume out, Bakumatsu Mesukousei Hana to Ookami  (幕末女子高生 花と狼). Check out my reviews of previous volumes, Bakumatsu Joshikousei – Oni to Yoake ((幕末女子高生 鬼と夜明け) Volume 1, Volume 2, and Oni to Yoake Yuzikiyo (鬼と夜明け 夕月夜), which I read in the wrong order. ^_^

Weekly Champion (blecch) has a new Yuri manga, Obaka wo Mederu, (お葉花（バカ）を愛でる」) about Kunika, a doofusy Student Council President and her VP, a childhood friend, via Comic Natalie.

Yuri Light Novel

Via Sr, YNN Correspondent Sean Gaffney, the 6th novel in the Roll Over and Die series, ‘Omaegotoki ga Maou ni Kateru to Omouna’ to Yuusha paati o Tsuihousaretanode, Outo de Kimama ni Kurashitai 6 (お前ごときが魔王に勝てると思うな」と勇者パーティを追放されたので、王都で気ままに暮らしたい ) has a late August release in Japan.

Via Sean once again, the Girls Line imprint of Fantasia Bunko, Shino to Ren Future (志乃と恋Future) is the novelization of their Yuri series Shino to Ren. This is an adult life novel series based on a 4-volume manga of the same name, about a model and a math teacher.

Via YNN Correspondent akatsukinoluna, “Hitokiri” Shoujo, Koushaku Reijou no Goei ni Naru (人斬り』少女、公爵令嬢の護衛になる) by Sasato Goro, was an “enjoyable, fantasy yuri – bodyguard for hire & the countess she’s protecting.” Not deep, but fun.

Yuri Manga

Koharu and Minato: My Partner Is A Girl from Seven Seas

I wasn’t sure, but once I was able to confirm in the magazine itself, Comic Yuri Hime is planning on a 20th anniversary exhibition. Location is listed as “somewhere in Japan.” ^_^;

August will see the release of The Anemone Feels the Heat, Volume 2 from Yen Press.

For those of you who like your Yuri violent and dysfunctional, Sal Jiang’s Tough Love at the Office: The Complete Yuri Collection is on shelves now!

Manga Mavericks has put out Sempai no Kohai by Hanakage Alt, and ANN’s Rebecca Silverman says it is a “a warm, gentle love story of the sort you could read over and over again.” 

Not Yuri, but… Kodansha it going to print with Volume 2 of Teppu, they say at SDCC, following what must have been a successful Volume 1 print.

Via Comic Natalie, we have Project Yuriforming! (プロジェクト・ユリフォーミング！), a story about aliens who come to “Yuriform the women of earth. This is a Kirara Max story, so goofy cute, random fanservice.

There’s not much overt Yuri this season, but we are watching No Freaking Way I’ll Be Your Lover! Unless… and Bolts, over at ANN speaks for most of us at Okazu in this clear-headed review of Episodes 1-3.

Also at ANN are very good reviews episodes 1-3 of of Bad Girl, by Lucas DeRuyter and Turkey! Time To Strike by Kennedy.

Baiheverse is excited to share a new collaboration with Bilibili comics, for the official release of  Straight Girl Trap about office worker Zhan Ying, and cold queen boss Zhou Yuanyou. and Seeing Xinghuo Again, which sounds like a paranormal school club adventure as Gu An sees something in an old school camera that sets her mind to fulfill the club’s wish from 3 years ago..

Baiheverse is asking that, even though there may be illicit versions of these floating out there on the Internets, they’d appreciate if folks supported the official versions with, y’know, money.

Yuri Manga

Pink Candy Kiss, Volume 3 will be headed our way in October. I reviewed Volume 1 and Eleanor Walker reviewed Volume 2 here on Okazu.

ANN’s Rafael Antonio Pineda has the news that Yuri Is My Job! will be resuming in Comic Yuri Hime after a 15-month hiatus. We’re all hopeful that Miman-sensei is feeling well and we’re very happy to have everyone back. ^_^

Ohsawa Yayoi has a new adult life office comedy Harrassment ga Kowai Maki-sempai!, (ハラスメントが怖いマキ先輩！) about a fantastic work sempai who would like to get to know her office kouhai better, but is desperately afraid of being seen as harassing her.

Comic Yuri Hime (コミック百合姫) is celebrating a 20th anniversary! We at Okazu have been covering them for all of those 20 years and we look forward to another 20 together. ^_^ They’ve put together a 20th Anniversary promotional video on Youtube, and, via Comic Natalie, they will be holding a 20th anniversary campaign this winter.

They are also putting out a handful of new anthologies, including and Gengoh Yuri Anthology, (元号百合アンソロジー) which has stories about Yuri through (and in between time), One-Night Yuri Anthology (ワンナイト百合アンソロジー), and a two part series Merry Bad End Yuri Anthology (メリーバッドエンド百合アンソロジー), Volume 1 and Volume 2.

Also from Comic Yuri Hime is Volume 1 of Yume to Koi de ha Hatsuri Awanai (夢と恋ではつり合わない) about a girl who believes that love will stand between her and her dreams, but falls in love anyway.

Via YNN Correspondent akatsukinoluna,  Kuzushiro’s story of work at a manga office, Egao no Taenai Shokuba Desu. (「笑顔のたえない職場です。), translated in English as A Mangaka’s Weirdly Wonderful Workplace anime adaptation offers us a trailer, main cast and some of the songs, Joanna Cayanan tells us on ANN. 

The movie of the series based on the movies, based on the series, Puella Magi Madoka Magica The Movie: Walpurgisnacht: Rising- trailer and release date is reported by ANN’s Alex Mateo.

Otakon is hosting staff and cast from Rock Is A Lady’s Modesty anime, says Adrian Hazra, and Crystalynn Hodgkins noted that the Rock Is A Lady’s Modesty manga is set to go on hiatus, both on ANN.

Kara Denison over at Crunchyroll News wants you to know that Turkey! Time To Strike is offering up creditless OP and ED segments for your enjoyment.

Trinket Studios hope you will wishlist Battle Suit Aces on Steam, for which they offered this delightful work in progress clip on Bluesky saying “If you like indie games, old school anime, or #yuri side stories, you should wishlist hybrid visual novel-deckbuilder Battle Suit Aces!”

Studio Élan  has announced that their upcoming Visual Novel Lock & Key: A Magical Girl Mystery will launch in September.

Once again over at Crunchyroll News, Komatsu-san has the amazing news that Dirty Pair! is celebrating at 40th anniversary with a memorial exhibition. In related news….

Magazines may be making a comeback? (Big question mark.) Shonen Jump was the longest-running manga magazine in English in print, but it has been replaced by the SJ app, where SJ manga are simulpubbed. Shoujo Beat is now just an imprint for shoujo and josei manga. But Galette magazine has had three incredibly successful kickstarters and Anime Herald is releasing a new anime magazine, in print (for which I wrote an article!). Now there is news that Kodansha’s Young Magazine has announced a special American issue. ANN’s Anita Tai has the details. It’s hard to say if this is merely a curiosity, or a trend equivalent to vinyl records, in which some collectors will just pay for the format because they like it better. As I see it, the battle to keep print alive is “how do we sell the container as well as the content?” This might be a last gasp for magazines as my generation ages out and no one is left to care.

Yuri Manga in English

The license announcements from Anime Expo have bloomed and we’re getting a nice crop of lilies this year.

Kodansha has announced Sal Jiang’s Wicked Spot. I genuinely enjoyed Volume 1 in Japanese. This tale of a witch who leaves her secluded village and joins humanity is just dark enough to really be enjoyable.

Tokyopop also has picked up Sal Jiang’s Ayaka Is In Love With Hiroko!, of which I have reviewed all three volumes in Japanese here on Okazu.

Speaking of Sal Jiang, an omnibus of Tough Love At The Office The Complete Yuri Collection, is heading our way this month from Seven Seas. They also just released SHWD, The Complete Yuri Collection. Both of these are on the Yuricon Store. 

Yen Press has two announcements for us – Out of the Cocoon, the short story collection by Yuriko Hara that includes a post Cocoon, Entwined story following our escaped protagonists. CW for the other stories that include cannibalism and death. Also, Yen is releasing a limited-edition hardcover webstore exclusive edition for The Guy She Was Interested In Wasn’t A Guy At All.

Kodansha also picked up one of my faves, Fall in Love with the Black Knight (For Her Money). Interesting choice on the title, as the original is about making the Black Knight fall for the Clarice. I’ve got Volume 1 of Gakeppuchi Reijou ha Kuro Kishi-sama o Horesasetai! here and will be reviewing it. Thanks NinjaGoemon for catching that.

Not specific to Yuri, but Square Enix manga titles have been added to Bookwalker Global, so now you can get your Otherside Picnic manga and light novels there, including Otherside Picnic manga, Volume 13, which is hitting shelves in November.

Yuri Manga in Japanese

Koi Yori Aoku, Volume 2 (恋より青く) is up on the Yuricon Store. Takamine and Sakukura attend different high schools as they slowly deepen their relationship.

My absolute favorite mangaka, Hayashiya Shizuru has just announced a new series, “Butchi-gumi ~ Yoroshiku isekai Warera Mabudachi Akkimessatsu Butchigiregumi” (ブッチ組 ～夜露死苦異世界 我等真武親友 悪鬼滅殺仏血義礼組 （よろしくいせかい われらまぶだち あっきめっさつぶっちぎれぐみ）).  Check out the free intro on Comic Nora. I had to use a VPN to access it the first time, but it seems to work okay without, now. I am hoping and praying that this is one of the hilarious ideas she used in “Tanerabo manga do it!” from Yuritora Jump, Volume 2 made real. I think it might be. She loves me. ^_^

Via Yuri Zona Spain on Bluesky, Ichijinsha is releasing  yrhm Yuri Hime 20th Anniversary Anthology (yrhm 百合姫20thアンソロジー) with new work by inori., Yuama, Kashikaze, Iwami Kyouko and others!

Baihe Manhua

Baiheverse has just released a new manhua title, The Wayward Tenant and Her Pretty Landlady by Nihaohaohaojun. Our Senior Baihe editor Frank says of the new title, “The quality of the story remains to be seen, but the English translation reads well and the art is top-notch.”

LGBTQ Manga

Random House Graphics is releasing I Want to Be Your Girl, Volume 1, by Umi Takase, about Hime who has always loved Akira and supports her when Akira decides to live as her true self. Sr. YNN Correspondent Sean G tells me that this is a separate imprint from RH that just debuted called Ink Pop.

A rec from the Okazu Discord, is High Class Homos, a fantasy about a gay prince and a lesbian princess who have a marriage of convenience.

Baihe Light Novel

Just as a reminder, Seven Seas’ first Baihe Light Novel, The Beauty’s Blade: Mei Ren Jian, by Feng Ren Zuo Shu will have a November release in English.

Via Douqi on Bluesky, “Pre-orders also open for baihe contemporary romance Her Various Moments (她的山海朝夕) by Hua Yu (华予), originally serialised as The Green Pear Pub (青梨酒馆 ).” This is a Chinese release.

Yuri Visual Novels & Games

Studio Élan has released Upwards, Rain! The Post Office of Farewells, which Staff Writer Eleanor Walker reviewed when the staff took a group look at Élan’s Dandelion Set.

LGBTQ+ streaming service GagaOOLaLa, is also offering a free serial code to Yuri game Tied by your Red to VIP members through July 17! Reviews look very positive overall.
