Yuri Manga

Huge news this week, as the folks behind quarterly, crowd-funded Yuri manga magazine Galette have announced an upcoming Kickstarter for an English language edition! Sign up now on Kickstarter to get updates and be informed when the Kickstarter launches. This is big news, as the magazine features some veteran creators, like Yorita Miyuki, Morinaga Milk and Hakamada Mera.

Galette is currently crowdfunded in Japanese on Pixiv Fanbox, I hope they open an English-language ongoing option for support. Fanbox is available in English as well. (Although Pixiv is a morally questionable company, management having been accused of sexually harassing employees.)

Sheep Princess in Wolf’s Clothing, Volume 3 is on shelves now. Grab the next volume of this furry, Yuri, fairytale from a link on the Yuricon Store!

Looking for something a little less cute? Otherside Picnic manga, Volume 11 might scratch that itch, with the Mountain Ranch and cult of Satsuki Uruma followers. Guest reviewer Sandy Ferguson caught us up to date in his review of Volume 10.

Adult Life can be complicated, as Haru and Hina learn in Throw Away the Suit Together, Volume 1, which hit shelves this month.

Koharu to Minato: Watashi No Partner Ha Onna No Ko, Volume 2 (小春と湊 わたしのパートナーは女の子) continues the love-love story I reviewed this week here on Okazu.

It was my genuine pleasure to read and review The Magical Revolution of the Reincarnated Princess and the Genius Young Lady, Vol. 7

Yuri Games

Via zhufree on X, Steam has a “ new #baihe game which lesbians made for lesbians“! 永日的凝视-The Gaze of The Eternal Sun is currently in Chinese only, although zhufree says the creators would like to do an EN translation, but do not have the money to do so.

Other News

Unseen Japan ( a recommended site to follow on the social platform of your choice) has the news that Netflix is launching the very first same-sex dating show in Japan, called The Boyfriend.

And in a completely bonkers decision, the folks behind Lycoris Recoil are dragging NFTs from their grave to auction off. According to the announcement, a “portion of the money will go to the creators in charge.” The auction site is pretty slow to load. A quick summation of the response was captured beautifully by this poster, who said, “I’d rather have a second season than an art auction.”

Overseas response seemed to be pretty negative, while Japanese response was split a little more evenly.

On a happier note, Netflix has posted the Sailor Moon Cosmos trailer to Youtube and Kodansha has announced a box set for the first 6 volumes of anniversary manga of Sailor Moon. Rafael Antonio Pineda has the details on ANN about that.

Kenichi Sonoda (Gunsmith Cats, Riding Bean) was awarded an Inkpot Award at San Diego Comic- Con to recognize the impact he has had on his industry. Joseph Luster has the news on Crunchyroll.

Via Yuri Navi, the manga series Hana wa Saku, Shura no Gotoku (花は咲く、修羅の如く) by Takeda Ayano and manga artist Mushu, currently being serialized in Ultra Jump magazine, will be made into a TV anime. This is about a girl whose love of reading brings in friends as she helps out with her school’s broadcasting club. Looks to be a nice everyday slice-of-life, cute girls doing cute things cutely, anime. I’m all for that.

Yuri Events

The schedule has dropped for Anime NYC and there are going to be a bunch of interesting panels. It’s got a nice mix of industry and fan stuff going on!. I’ll try and do a round-up before we’re live.

Please join TJ “Tiff” Ferentini, Jacqueline Fung, Nicole Roderick and myself on Friday, August 23 in Panel Room 3 for The Rise of Queer Manga and on Sunday, August 25 at 12:30, in Panel Room 1, for A History of Manga By Decades: Manga History Two Books At A Time, with myself and Zack Davisson, where we’ll be talking up our new book, Manga: A Visual History from DK!

Rica Takashima and I will be tabling together and we’re thinking of doing a little pop-up on where to get Yuri in Tokyo. In the mean time, I do want to let you know that Yuri Cafe Anchor has been rebranded to Anchor rainbowport Tokyo. It still is all about Yuri, and is very openly welcoming all genders, with a charge-free period every day, so it can function as a true “third space.” If you get a chance, you should drop by (and buy something to support them, anyway. ^_^)

I’ve put our very own Okazu merch back on the Yuricon Store just in time for you to show up at AnimeNYC wearing your love of Yuri on your chest. Our Okazu Mascots Love Yuri tee comes in 8 colors and sizes from Small to 3x. All of the new designs are back up on the Yuri Apparel section in multiple colors and sizes so I hope to see you proclaiming your love of Yuri at the con! You know I will be. ^_^

Also at AnimeNYC will be the first-ever North American Manga Awards! My very sincere congratulations to Deb Aoki who has working on the creation of this award for years. This is a much-needed award, as manga is regularly sidelined at the Eisners, even though manga is, as a category, the largest chunk of comic sales in the US. Two amazing lesbian works are up for awards: Sakaomi Yuzaki’s She Loves To Cook and She Loves To Eat, from Yen Press is up for a Best Continuing Series Award and the My Lesbian Experience With Loneliness Special Edition by Kabi Nagata, is up for Best Publication Design.  Check out the full nominations list on ANN by Rafael Antonio Pineda. Congrats to all the nominees! I’m so excited that this is a real thing after all that work by so many folks.

Yuri manga artist Inui Ayu shared some photos of the Shoujo x Shoujo 4 Yuri Managka Exhibition (少女と少女と少女~百合作家4人展~) in Kichioji this week, featuring work by Morinaga Milk, Hakamada Mera, Hatosaki Haru and Morita Miyuki.  My favorite photo shows the nicely framed Yuri prints in the window, where anyone passing by can see them. ^_^

Don’t miss Miguel Adarlo’s report on the The Guy She Was Interested In Wasn’t a Guy at All Cafe, this week on Okazu!

If you’ve attended any Yuri-themed event or location, we’d love your impressions, Contact us here to write something up for Okazu.

Yuri Manga

My Idol Sits the Next Seat Over, Volume 7 is on the Yuricon Store. This volume completes the series and we had Luce let us know how it went this week on Okazu!

Also on the Store is Kiss the Scars of the Girls, Volume 3, by Haruhana Ayu. The cover may not be final, but the story sure is. Check out Okazu Staff Writer Christian Le Blanc’s hilarious review of Volume 2 this week.

Matt Marcus did a great review of Assorted Entanglements, Volume 5 for us this week, as well!

Rafael Antonia Pineda has the news that Kodama Naoko’s latest series for Comic Yuri Hime, “Usotsuki Hanayome to Dousei Kekkon-ron” is ending in the September issue of the magazine. Volume 1 of the manga is on the Yuricon Store!

Joana Cayanan has the news that Yodokawa’s adult life romantic comedy Maitsuki Niwatsuki Ooyatsuki, is ending with the August chapter. We have volumes 1-4 on the Store in Japanese and Volumes 1-3 in English.

Via Comic Natalie, two new series are starting in Comic Yuri Hime, “Kimi ga Hoeru Tame no Uta o” is a story about a girl who has a complex about her husky voice and a singer she admires who teams up with her, and Usui Shio’s new series, “Bokura no Ai ha Kimochi Warui,” about women with unusual sexual fetishes.

Yuri Visual Novel News

ANN’s Rafael Antonio Pineda has the news that Yuri Visual Novel, Uso kara Hajimaru Koi no Natsu ~The Summer Romance Bloomed From A Lie~ (嘘から始まる恋の夏 ) is getting a manga adaptation in Comic Yuri Hime, called Uso kara Hajimaru Koi no Natsu ~ squall.

Yuri Live Action

Rafael Antonio Pineda also has the news that Chaser Game W, the live-action series based on the manga of the same name, is getting a second season. Season 1 was reviewed here on Okazu by Staff Writer Frank Hecker, who has been amazing at  tracking down and reviewing live action Yuri!

Just want to remind folks, too to watch Ayaka is in Love With Hiroko, available on GagaOOLala streaming with EN subtitles or TVer.jp on for free in Japanese only. This has been a very entertaining adaptation of the manga, Aayaka-chan ha  by Sal Jiang so far!

The Look Back anime film has topped 1 billion yen at Japanese box offices. Alex Mateo has the news on ANN. Studio Ghibli head Suzuki Toshio had some comments on the movie trailer. Daryl Harding over at Crunchyroll News has that report.

Other News

Of interest to folks here, Just Like Mona Lisa, Volume 1 was reviewed by Mr. AJCosplay over on ANN. In a world where most people choose their gender by 12 years old, our protagonist is 18 and happily non-binary, until they are caught up in a love triangle. Read the review for details of the good and the problematic.

Good news from Dark Horse, who has announced a new omnibus edition of Sonoda Kenichi’s Gunsmith Cats. Crystalyn Hodgkins has the news on ANN. If you’re a recent fan of Yuri, you should pick this up to understand the kind of material we had to work with in the early years. ^_^ I am both joking and being quite serious. (I also wrote some GSC fanfic back in the day that I still like, so there’s that.)

We have some items up on the Yuricon Store for you!

The Summer You Were There, Volume 5 is the penultimate volume of this series. Kaori and Shizuku have been through so much, will they get the book done before the inevitable?

Class S tale of vampires at school, Kiss the Scars of the Girls, Volume 2  continues the story, such as it is Christian LeBlanc will be reviewing it for us shortly, as he has already reviewed Volume 1.

Also coming up in a review from Luce, My Idol Sits the Next Seat Over, Volume 7 is on the Store for you all to enjoy.

Sasayakuyou no Koi wo Utau, Volume 9 (ささやくように恋を唄う) brings us through Shiho’s arc, at last. Now we can all move on.

Twinstar Cyclone Runaway, Volume 1 (ツインスター・サイクロン・ランナウェイ) is a Yuri short story contest-winning science fiction story turned into a manga. Can our protagonist find someone to fish with, when fishing is only allowed for husbands and wives?

Inui Ayu manga Matou Kimi, Hokorubu Watashi (まとう君、ほころぶ私) is being released on eBook Renta manga service in English from Shodenhsa! Fan of Inui-sensei’s gentle slice-of-adult-life manga should jump on that.

Yorita Miyuki is running a Kickstarter of her collection  Her Kiss, My Libido Twinkles (彼女のくちづけ感染するリビドー). Click the appropriate link on the page to get the news when it launches!

Yuri Literature

Lee Sanhwa’s cyborg science fiction, An Error Occured (오류가 발생했습니다) is now up on the Yuricon Store. It is in Korean and, as I said in my review, it was a great read.

Kanojo. Yuri Short Story Anthology  (彼女。百合小説アンソロジー) is, as it says, a short story collection, that has the distinction of being available to Japanese Amazon users as an audiobook as well as in print.

I’m in Love with the Villainess: She’s so Cheeky for a Commoner (Light Novel), Volume 3 is up for pre-order. This concludes the Claire P.O.V. spin-off that is absolutely worth reading for the extra content.

I’m in Love with the Villainess: She’s so Cheeky for a Commoner Audiobook, Volume 2 – For those of use who want to experience the story as read and acted by Courtney Shaw, this volume – which I reviewed in print last week – is hitting devices next month.

Anime News

Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha is a series that almost always fails to do anything I want it to do. For a 10th anniversary, it turned the first two seasons of the TV anime into films which have been reviewed here (Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha The Movie 1st and Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha The Movie 2nd A’s)

For the 20th anniversary the films are being turned back into TV series.

… Okay, I guess. I just think it might have been cool to do something new. Movie up StrikerS, or animate Force…or hey, how about a new series? Nope. Okay. Anyway, Rafael Antonio Pineda has the news on ANN.

We have some new titles on the Yuricon Store!

Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou Deluxe Edition, Volume 5 hits shelves next month and I cannot wait for an end of the world which is far gentler than that which we are headed into.

If you have not read it, please do give The Moon On A Rainy Night, Volume 5  a read. Things are changing here in ways that are remarkable. I love this story so much.

We’ve also added Kiss the Scars of the Girls, Volume 1, which was reviewed here by Christian LeBlanc.

Lastly, Yukidoke to Agapanthus, Volume 2 (雪解けとアガパンサス) continues a story of which I reviewed the first volume of here on Okazu. Will Summer be thawed by Spring? Yes, obviously. ^_^

There is a delay with The Rose of Versailles Episodes, Manga, Volume 1, which contains the 40th anniversary comics for the series. I am amazed at the complications this series has faced, falling through every single possible crack in all the awards it could possibly ever have been eligible for. This absolute fucking classic of manga has been utterly ignored by the Eisners. It’s a crime, honestly. But I beg you to please get this volume. It is SO worth it.

Great news for Yuri fans in France, via YNN Correspondent Manga’Albine. Meian has licensed This Monster Wants To Eat Me, Volumes 1 & 2 are on their site so far. Meian also put together a list of their French-language Yuri licenses on Twitter that is very impressive!

More evidence that Kininatteru Hito Ga Otoko Janakatta is definitely being set up for success. My local Kino had both volumes of the series front and center on their Pride month display and had acrylic art plates (which I absolutely might have bought but they were $80 each and I just couldn’t,_ so I bought a couple of blind box pins and got them in a promotional bag! YNN Correspondent An Over Acheiving Potato noticed the “retro music” soundtrack CD for the series on store shelves. I am delighted at this and wonder if this could lead to a live-action drama, given the complexity of licensing any of the music.

And, for those folks in Tokyo, there is a Kininatteru Hito Ga Otoko Janakatta cafe in Tower Records in Omotesando. Do let us know how it is!

Comic Natalie tells ups about Bodokan (ボドカン) that takes place in a prison where the female prisoners” play boardgames and form Yuri couples.” Points for the cops being literal pigs. Check out a sample chapter on Comic Walker in Japanese.

Anime News

Anime Expo hasn’t brought us much in way of manga, but the anime news is good.

A Rose of Versailles anime movie has been announced for 2025. It looks awfully like the Rose of Versailles anime movie I saw a trailer for at the Tokyo Animation Fair a decade ago. Hrm… Anyway, check out the trailer on the official Twitter account and sit up a bit straighter when you hear that they picked Sawashiro Miyuki as Oscar and Hirano Aya as Marie Antoinette. Nice choices.

Viz Media announced an anime (and probably more manga) license for RWBY, which…good! It’s a series I have stuck with since the beginning and deserves to get a decent end. Plus, Blake and Yang are kind cute together. ^_^

Momentary Lily premiered and ANN’s MrAJCosplay said of it, “I felt like I was having keys dangled in my face while multicolored bleach was poured into my eyes.” So, exactly what we expected, then ^_^

On the 40th Anniversary of  Magical Angel Creamy Mami, Studio Pierrot announced that they are planning a new Magical Girl series. Crystalynn Hodgkins has the details on ANN.

Rafael Antonio Pineda says that Crunchyroll will be adding Go! Princess Precure and Witchy Precure (presumably ahead of streaming the new Mahoutsukai Precure Mirai sequel anime). I will continue to pine for a Heartcatch sequel.

Yuri Live-Action

After a number of delays, we have returned our most popular shirts to the Yuricon Store on Printify!

To make it easier for me to sell them, I am also added them back to the Yuricon Store under Yuri Apparel. Right now, we have the incredibly popular 50 Years of Yuri Couples T-Shirt and the 100 Years of Yuri T-shirt, which comes in 7https://www.yuricon.com/product-category/yuri-apparel/ colors. All shirts are available in sizes Small to 3X.

Once everything is back up, I’ll think about some new designs…maybe featuring some of the art for By Your Side.

Other News

Not Yuri in the slightest, I want to just give my recommendation to The Apothecary Diaries light novels. They are super fun, great summer reading. Volume 1 is out now and Volume 2 is headed our way in August. This is one of those rare series that my wife and I agree upon.

Also notable, this weekend at Anime Expo, an anime for award-winning manga Witch Hat Atelier was announced. This series is something I have long be meaning to read, so maybe I’ll finally get around to it now. ^_^Alex Mateo has the news on ANN.

ANN’s Bamboo Dong reports on an AX panel of interest in The Beauty of Takarazuka Transcends Borders.

Yuri Live Action

Ayaka Is In Love With Hiroko, based on Sal Jiang’s manga of the same name (of which I have reviewed Volume 1 and Volume 2 here on Okazu) is getting a live-action series and is pounding the internets with updates. ANN’s Crystalyn Hodgkins has news of the premiere of the opening theme and  ending theme for the series.

This series is meant as a comedy, so I think the character of Hiroko is going to be key to the success of the thing, as she is the overtly gay character. Happily, the trailer seems like she’s going to be handled well enough by Mori Kana.

Okazu Staffer Frank Hecker notes that this series will be getting an international release with subtitles on the GagaOOLala pan-asian LGBTQ+ media streaming service, on July 5th.

Some Thai GL news from Frank, as well. The Secret Of Us, Episode 1 is up on Youtube! This appears to be  story of a professional women rekindling a love with a former lover who had broken her heart.

Yuri Manga

ANN’s Rafael Antonio Pineda wants you to know that Usui Shio has a new series beginning in Comic Yuri Hime, which looks like a stark departure from her recent gentle romances. Bokura no Ai wa Kimochi Warui, is yet another fetish relationship in a magazine that has become increasingly laden with them among the fantasy stories.

Rafael also has the sad news that Yuri Is My Job manga is on indefinite hiatus as the author is in ill health. We all wish Miman-sensei a speedy recovery.

Yuri Anime

Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch From Mercury has been released in a smexy Steelbook Blu-ray set. Season 1 and Season 2 are up on the Yuricon store!

Dollip Daze has hosted a Q&A with the English voice cast for I’m In Love With The Villianess. Check it out on Youtube.

Whisper Me A Love Song continues to have production issues through Episode 10. I’m only mentioning this here, because I do feel that I’m In Love With The Villainess had a visibly very low production budget and I really hope Ichijinsha stops trying to make anime on a shoestring. It makes it harder to tell people that it’s worth it to watch. Alex Mateo has details on ANN.

On the premise that all PreCure are of interest to Okazu fans (which may be a stretch, I know, but oh well) Anita Tai wants you to know that the Wonderful PreCure! Movie theme song has been released. This movie will have appearances from characters from Hirogaru and Mahou Tsukai PreCure series. I am shocked, honestly that I am still watching and enjoying Wonderful Precure! Given the premise I didn’t think I’d last a week, but here we are and I’m still watching.

Continuing the stretch, let’s talk Sound Euphonium, for a bit. Episode 12 aired and it was an *amazing* episode, except for one fatal flaw that I cannot forgive. I promise to discuss in  future review. But today, let’s look at what Ken Iikura-Gross has to say on ANN, about the novel author’s reaction to the episode. It is a bit interesting and may make me seek out the manga.

Stilllll stretching, Alex Mateo on ANN notes that Bad Girl manga is getting an anime. Let’s cut to the chase here – good girl pretending to be delinquent in a Mangatime Kirara Carat manga series, so…good chance on Yuri-adjacency.

Yuricon/Okazu trivia time. Back in the late 1990s when we had a Yuricon Mailing List on Yahoo groups, I ran a poll about people’s favorite Yuri character. The very first winner of that poll was….Priss from Bubblegum Crisis. For more than a decade after that, I would periodically receive angry ranting emails, “explaining” to me that Priss was not a lesbian, goddammit, how DARE I think so. The fact that this was not my personal choice aside, it was always so sad/funny how angry people got at that. Anyway. I watched Crisis and Crash and 2040 and Priss is bi, get over it. ^_^
