Yuri Anime

Last week we had a poster, this week we have a bit of news. Takashima Hiromi’s Asagao to Kase-san is getting a short “Animation clip”. Check out the official website, Asagao-Anime for more news on that.

Pony Canyon released a promotional video of the effort this week.

Also from the website, the  Kase-san manga will be serialized on the Line Manga tool, which is excellent news for those of us who like the series! The first installation was to have started this past Tuesday, so Japanese readers can let us know how it looks.

From YNN Correspondent Shannon L, ANN reports that A Cenatur’s Life anime will premier in July.

The anime for Saburouta’s series Citrus will begin in November 2017, according to Comic Natalie. Kodama Naoko’s NTR: Netsuzou Trap anime will also be hitting around the same time, says Crunchyroll News. I will be glad to have someone review the Citrus anime, but NTR comes nowhere near this blog.

From khoda on Twitter, there is a Rose of Versailles cafe  in Yokohama through September, with trick paintings that allow you to sit in the palm of Oscar’s hand, be part of a painting scene.or get cornered by Andre. ^_^

In case you missed it, Brigid Alverson interviewed me this week all about Yuri Manga on the Barnes & Noble blog. It starts with a definition and has some history, so if you’re looking for a place to point people to explain what Yuri is and make some recommendations, it’s a solid place to begin.

The fifth Sailor Moon musical will play this coming autumn in Tokyo, according to Crunchyroll News. Obviously, it will cover the Sailor Stars arc. ^_^

Yuri Manga Interview on Barnes and Noble Blog

March 24th, 2017

Thanks to the kindness (and good timing) of Brigid Alverson, the Barnes and Noble blog has an interview with me all about Yuri Manga. The good timing part is really important, because I get to talk at length about some of the great Yuri manga that has recently hit shelves. As you all know, the main thing that will convince publishers to license more Yuri manga is good sales of the Yuri manga they are currently putting out. So the more folks who learn of and buy the very decent Yuri manga in the store right now, the better. ^_^

Drop by the interview and make your suggestions for more great Yuri manga to buy in the comments!

Yuri Drama CD: Grand Stage Romance Review, Volume 4 (Kohaku Minami) / グラン・ステージ ロマンスレビュー 第4幕「美波琥珀」

March 23rd, 2017

All you lovely folks who wrote in to tell me that Grand Stage Romance Review, Volume 4 (Kohaku Minami) / グラン・ステージ ロマンスレビュー 第4幕「美波琥珀」was pretty goshdarn Yuri…you were so right! Although I’m always going to be partial to Hiou Akito’s second drama CD, Minami is pretty wonderful in this disk.

Minami, you may remember from her  first CD, is the second of two Grand Stage stars in her family. Her sister Kurea (Claire) is sort of overbearing in an “I only want you to be happy” kind of way. She’s annoying in her care and attention. She’s also voiced by Kitamura Eri, who voices Minami, who carries this duel role throughout the CD.

Minami has found genuine passion for the Grand Stage and pretty much credits the person she loves for that. It seems obvious that that person is us, her sempai and partner, but either we pretend to not know at first, or haven’t clued in. I was disappointed in us.

But, eventually Minami comes clean and admits flat out that we are the person she loves. She doesn’t ask for an answer, per se, but confesses like a person who really wants to confess.

We are, remember, older, wiser and a good friend of Kurea’s. It’s pretty clear that we’re not “in love” with Minami, even though we obvious care deeply about her. So even though we are not leaping into Minami’s arms, it’s both admirable and sweet that she comes right out and tells us her feelings.

The CD ends with Minami singing her song about happiness, “Sachi,” which you can hear on this Youtube preview.

Ratings:

Overall – 8 (A point off for Kurea, she’s just kind of annoying.)

You go, Minami. I bet you’ll win us over one day. ^_^

Watashi to Kanojo no Otomari Eiga Manga (私と彼女のお泊まり映画)

March 22nd, 2017

Koharu and Mayumi have been friends since high school. They have a standing “date” on Friday nights. Koharu picks a movie and they watch it. And then they talk about it.

Mostly Koharu teases Mayumi for having very little reaction and Mayumi teases Koharu for having a very big reactions. Koharu likes romances and dramas, Mayumi prefers action and horror.

At the end of every chapter we get a movie review. And that’s basically the entirety of Yasuda Kosuke’s Watashi to Kanojo no Otomari Eiga (私と彼女のお泊まり映画).

In between movie reviews we do learn a little bit about the two women, and, in the final pages, they have a rather touching moment where they acknowledge that friendship with each other has changed them both for the better.

If you really want to read two manga characters discussing how Mad Max Fury Road, or Inside Out made them feel, then this is the book for you. ^_^

Ratings:

Art – 6 It has moments of not so good
Character – 7 Nice kids, I’d have them over for lunch
Story – 5 We’re literally listening to them talk about movies they just watched.
Yuri – 0 They are friends. They hug. Koharu even sleeps over in what had to be the most refreshingly unsexual sleepover scene I’ve read in ages
Service – 4 You wouldn’t think there could be, but sometimes Mayumi’s breasts are centered for reasons

Overall – 6

You know…I’d probably read another volume. Nothing happened in a refreshingly normal way and it was kind of nice.

Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid Anime (English)

March 21st, 2017

Most of you are probably too young  to remember the television series Bewitched.  It was about a guy, Darrin, who lived a normal, boring salaryman life in the affluent American suburbs. Darrin was so dull and uninteresting that after a few years, they switched the actor who played him and mostly no one noticed.

The “comedy” in Bewitched was centered around Darrin’s wife – a vivacious, beautiful woman…who was a witch. Samantha could wiggle her nose and make objects appear and disappear and change forms and turn people into toads and that kind of thing. That might have been marginally amusing on it’s own, but it wasn’t the point. The point of the series is that this beautiful, vivacious, magically powered woman (and all her bohemian relatives) were constantly being forced by Darrin in his utter dullness to conform to American middle class affluent white life. It was supposed to be hi-larious watching Darrin (or his boss, or neighbor) get all confuzzled by a magic spell. Watching Bewitched as a child, I constantly felt so angry. I wanted Samantha to take her cool powers, her fun and colorful family and burn down whereeverthefuck she was supposed to be living.

To me, Bewitched was not a comedy, it was a tragedy. Instead of making Samantha the protagonist, it insisted on centering Darrin with his soul-killing boringness, sexist and racist boss and attitudes and general embodiment of Greyface to Samantha and her Erisian clan.

I finally sat down to watch Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid (streaming free and legally on Crunchyroll) and by the second episode, I realized that I was watching Bewitched all over again.  It’s absolutely possible that Darrin, I mean Kobayashi, might become a warm loving person, but about halfway through the second episode, when she was being kind to Kanna, after basically being an asshole to Tohru and demanding Tohru never use her powers after Tohru worked so hard to make her happy, I gave up.

Darrin is not interesting.  Forcing Samantha to be boring is not funny.

Any series that takes a character with cool powers and then spends all it’s time telling that character to never use those powers? Nope. ^_^;

Yes, Tohru is in love with Kobayashi. And that’s the entirely of that plot complication. It’s got nowhere to go, because Kobayashi being an absolute gut-searing bore is the plot. And it’s all the comedy too.

Nope.

Ratings:

Art – 6 Moe blobs and bouncing breasts
Story – 3 I fantasized about rewriting it wholly into Tohru and her human’s fun adventures!
Characters – 6 Speaking of 70s TV shows. It was all Odd Couple hijinks
Service – yeppers
Yuri – 1

Overall – 5

Obviously, lots of people enjoy the series – and I’m glad. I’m just not one of them.
