Yuri Manga: Only ☆You~Anata to Watashi no Futari Bocchi Keikaku (オンリー☆ユー ~あなたと私の二人ぼっち計画~)

May 24th, 2016

OYTPTGMAYA-e1461416904969Only ☆You~Anata to Watashi no Futari Bocchi Keikaku  (オンリー☆ユー ~あなたと私の二人ぼっち計画~) starts off with a cute-ish premise. What if, the Student Council President decides, girls who are loners are paired up together and this way they won’t be alone?

Okay, this is not the worst premise in the world.

The Student Council has rings made up. Girls inducted into the “Only You” Project are paired off with matched rings. The rings will give them a shock if they get further than 5 meters away from each other and can’t be removed. Oh and they can’t leave the school premises either.

Okay, this is the worst premise in the world.

I mean, in two pages, we go from, kind of sweet, sort of dorky, to coercion and torture and forced confinement? What the…?

From there, the story devolves into mismatched communication styles resolved by screamed confessions and running after one another tearfully.

Of course, friendship is never the point of these pairings. The rings are the dead giveaway. The President isn’t helping girls not be alone, she’s matchmaking.

The couples all get together in the end. I’m sure you’re all as surprised as I was.

mekimeki’s art is competent and moe, as one might expect. The girls are emotionally tortured over things that are never resolved, except that now that they have someone who loves them, it’s all okay. As one might expect.

Ratings:

Art – 7
Story – 5 Predictable, sometimes getting a little too close to creepy
Characters – I remember one character’s name. Of about 8 characters
Service – 3 Not nearly as bad as I feared
Yuri – 2 Yes, but no

Overall – 5

If the lesson “being with someone, no matter how incompatible, is better than being alone,” resonates with you, this book is definitely your jam.

A [Very] Brief History of Yuri

May 22nd, 2016

Here are the full text and graphics I used in my presentation at the Tokyo Comics Showcase, Vol. 1, on May 3, 2016 as part of Tokyo Rainbow Pride. If you have 8 minutes, you can understand where Yuri came from and the why of what you’re looking at.

May 24 update: The video now has a choice of Japanese or English subtitles.  ^_^

If you’d like to use the text and/or graphics for a Yuri Panel of your own, please feel free to contact me!

Yuri Manga

Ohkami-san to Keruberosu (大上さんとケルベロスゥ!) by Naraba is a vaguely mythology-themed take on school life Yuri.

The July issue of Comic Yuri Hime hit shelves this week.

Volume 6 of Kuzushiro’s Kimi no Tamenara Shineru (姫のためなら死ねる) is out and wacky as ever.

Toaru Kekkon (とある結婚) by Kumaba Ruri is a fictionalized story of a German-American woman and a Japanese woman living in California who get married.  This is book is being published by Ohta Publishing – the same folks who put out Sweet Blue Flowers. So maybe there’s an ally on staff there, too.

Yuri Manga: HaruYuri (ハルユリ)

May 20th, 2016

In Volume 1 of HaruYuri (ハルユリ), Ichijou Ranko is a boyish, charming young woman and unknown to herself, all the girls fall for her instantly. But none of them go as far as Sakurano Komachi who, on the very first day of school, kisses her and lamprey-like attaches herself to Ranko possessively.

What follows is a series of tedious tropes, delusional “imaginary Yuri” gags (’cause you know, teen girls think just like creepy old guys) for about half a volume, then suddenly we’re in one of those magic schools where the girls all pair off and suddenly everyone turns out to be a couple.

Pairs include the president and vice-president of the student council. (I cannot for the life of me remember the vice-president of my high school student council. Or the secretary. I remember the President, vaguely.) The one couple that softened my attitude towards the book was the unlikely geek doujinshi girl and super-fashionable girl couple – pretty much because the fashionable girl is horrified at herself.

But what about Ranko and Komachi? Lamprey and shark, all the way through.

It sounds like a pretty bad book and I’m not going to say it was good,  but when all the couples start talking and getting to be friends, I kinda found a soft spot for it.

Ratings:

Art – 7 Competently drawn, but wacky facial expressions throughout.
Story – 3 I’ll let you know when one shows up
Characters – 7 Okay
Service – 5 Imaginary, you know, so it doesn’t count. Except that it does.
Yuri – 6

Overall – 6ish, maybe 7 by the end

Is that soft spot soft enough to get Volume 2? I have no idea, honestly. I guess we’ll see.

Event: Informal Okazu Meetup at Girls Love Festival on June 5

May 18th, 2016

Girls Love Festival, the largest Yuri-only doujinshi show in Japan is coming up in the Tokyo Metrpolitan area on June 5.  You can check out the attending circles, the series they plan on having doujinshi of, and what their websites are on the GLF website.

Because at least a couple of our loyal readers and Okazu friends plan on attending, I had a fun idea. Here is an Okazu badge for you to print out and wear:

okazu-banner02 (2)

(It should print out at about 2.5″ x 4″, but I know it might not, because printers….)

If you are a member of our Okazu family and want to connect with other readers and fans, feel free to print this out and pin it on your person. This way you’ll be able to recognize each other.  I’m sorry I won’t be there, but that gives you all the chance to bond over those times you disagreed with me. ^_^ Okazu reader Michiru has already offered an event report, but if you’re there, do please send us your report – and I hope you’ll tell me how nice it was to meet each other!

This is the very first Okazu meetup where I’m not myself involved, so if you’re wearing the badge, please abide by Okazu community rules – you can say mean stuff about me, but not about each other and please be friendly and polite to the artists. I want them to have a good impression of those of us on Okazu!

Above all, have loads of fun and tell us all about it! And I want a picture of all of you. ^_^
