Yuri Anime: Inugami-san to Nekoyama-san (English)

June 3rd, 2014

InutoNekoInugami-san to Nekoyama-san by Kuzushiro-sensei is an entertaining, not very emotionally taxing manga series that runs in Comic Yuri Hime. I’ve reviewed the first two volumes of the manga here on Okazu: Volume 1 | Volume 2.

When the anime for Inugami-san to Nekoyama-san was announced, I had no compelling drive to run to see it, but since it is streaming on Crunchyroll (regional restrictions may apply), I had a chance to check it out while I was on the road this weekend – and I was pleasantly surprised. ^_^

The story,  such as it is, is the non-adventures of girls at a school who have animal names, and appear to have the temperamental characteristics of the animals they are named for. The leads are Inugami Yachiyo (a name which is mostly likely a pun on the famous faithful dog statue at Shibuya, Hachiko. 八千代 – Yachiyo ハチ公- Hachiko) and Nekoyama Suzu (whose given name implies to the small bells on a cat’s collar.) True to their names Inugami-san is dog-like, while Nekoyama-san is cat-like. Ushiwaka, (cow) Nezu, (mouse) Sarutobi (monkey) and Torikai (bird) have all joined the cast in the episodes so far.

The voice cast gives the characters a cuteness that I was not reading into their voices in the manga, a quality that lightens the mood and makes the anime more enjoyable than it might be. The gags in this series are low –  sexual innuendo, bad puns, and snort-ful cheap laughs, so I’m perfectly happy to have the tone lightened throughout. The one thing that really stands out in the first half of anime episodes is that Inugami-san and Nekoyama-san actually have an interest in one another. There’s a cheap laugh bit at the end of the 6th episode in which they find themselves clearly talking about themselves as a couple.

Episodes are 3 minutes long, and focus on some of the most suggestive scenes in the manga and you know, I’m not really going to bitch about that. ^_^ It’s being sold as “Yuri”, and the anime audience in Japan is a subtle as a brick to the forehead, so whatever works. As I said in the Kill La Kill ANNcast, it’s easier for me to deal with grossly overplayed service than coy pretend-innocent BS, of the kind one finds in Sakura Trick.

Ratings:

Art – 8 More consistent than the manga, sorry Kuzushiro-sensei
Story – 6 There isn’t one, but that’s okay
Character – 7 Whittled down to ther essence as they are here, I find I quite like them.
FanService – 6 Mostly lustful fantasies
Yuri – 7 Still mostly lustful fantasies, with the addition of the Inu/Neko and Ushi/Nezumi couples

Overall – 8

More entertaining than I expected and kind of cute in places; the anime captures Kuzushiro-sensei’s narrative style well.

Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Manga, Perfect Edition, Volume 6 (美少女戦士セーラームーン)

June 2nd, 2014

In Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Manga, Perfect Edition, Volume 6 (美少女戦士セーラームーン), the Death Busters Arc comes to a climax with all of the things happening all at once.

Mistress 9 appears and finds herself locked in a battle for Hotaru’s body with Sailor Saturn…which is really super creepy and could have carried the story by itself if it had had to.

Sailor Moon finds herself powering up yet again, and so much so that she drags all the Senshi with her to “Super” form. Sailor Saturn destroys everything and Sailor Moon saves it and Michiru, Haruka and Setsuna take Hotaru away to raise her as the most awesome alternative family in all of manga. But I’m not biased or anything. ^_^

The story ends with the Outers helicoptering off to their Yuri paradise in the sky. This is still the best arc of the manga, hands down. ^_^

Following all of this is the lead-in to SuperS season, which is my least favorite, so expect me to review it in one fell swoop. But. I find, for some reason unknown to me, Chibi-Usa is not annoying me as much this time around. We’ll see how I feel after re-watching the old anime and being reminded of Araki Kai’s epic whine, if that remains true. ^_^

The extras are another of Chibi-Usa’s diary, this one a little ditty about Sailor Moon souvenir watches and evil energy suckers, and the poignantly sweet story about when Luna falls in love that was turned into the Super S Movie which was really pretty good, actually. ^_^

Ratings:

Art – 8
Story – 9 (When Saturn swings her Silence Glaive, I get chills)
Characters – 9
Yuri – 2 In Luna’s story, there’s an ever-so-small moment between Haruka and Michiru.
Service – 3 On principle for long legs and short skirts.

Overall – 9

Best cover, some of my favorite artbook images, and generally speaking, the strongest story – Volume 6 is great in reality, not just in memory. ^_^ Many thanks to Okazu Superhero Jye N. for his sponsorship of today’s review!

Events: “Secret” History of Yaoi and Yuri Panel at AnimeNEXT 2014

June 1st, 2014

Join me for The “Secret” History of Yaoi and Yuri panel at AnimeNEXT on Saturday, June 7, 2014 at 5:30!

We’ll be looking at Heian literature and art to find the earliest mentions of what we would now call Yaoi or Yuri. We’ll trace these elements from magazines for girls of the early 20th century to the shoujo manga revolution of the 1970s to explain all the most popular tropes of BL and Yuri manga and anime.

As usual, there will be prizes for good questions, so I hope you’ll drop in and say hi!

Yuri Network News (百合ネットワークニュース) – May 31, 2014

May 31st, 2014

YNN_LissaQuickie data dump while I’m on the road today.

YNN Correspondent Emily C. writes in with the coolest news! “Drama CD maker éterire recently announced a new series called Grand Stage which I thought might be of interest.

“It has clear roots in Takarazuka; the story revolves around the main character having to join a revue and picking one of five otokoyaku to partner with. The cast is stellar, with the main characters being voiced by Ogata Megumi, Toyoguchi Megumi, Inoue Marina, Kitamura Eri, and of course, Saiga Mitsuki. éterire is specifically marketing it as a story containing an all-female cast that is made for females, quite an unusual move, especially since the majority of yuri seems to be made for a male demographic. A quick look at Twitter suggests that the ones interested in it are mainly female, too…”

A quick look at the site is pretty squee-worthy and we can look for it in Autumn of 2014. Thanks Emily! ANN also has an article about the CD, you might want to check out.

Ynn Correspondent Jin H. wants you to know that Crunchyroll announced that they also will be streaming the new Sailor Moon Crystal anime season. I’m glad because NicoNico Douga is just clunky IMHO. I’m glad to have the option. ^_^

On to another awesome goods-producing anime – Revolutionary Girl Utena iPhone 5 cases and Eternal Utena figurine.

Finally for today, please enjoy the Anime News Network podcast on which I participate in a discussion of Kill La Kill.

The horror-thriller series Psycho-Pass will get an Xbox One game, based on the anime.

Everyone’s best friend with a Yuri crush, Tomoyo from Card Captor Sakura is getting an Nendroid figure.

That’s a wrap for this week! Become a Yuri Network Correspondent by sending me any Yuri-related news you find. Emails go to anilesbocon01 at hotmail dot com. Not to the comments here, please, or they might be forgotten or missed. There’s a reason for this madness. This way I know you are a real human, not Anonymous (which I do not encourage – stand by your words with your name!) and I can send you a YNN correspondent’s badge. Thanks to all of you – you make this a great Yuri Network!

Western Comic: Namesake, Volume 1 (English)

May 30th, 2014

namesakevol1cover_largeSummers seem to me to be the perfect time for breaking out all the cool-female-character comics I’m reading, and fun lesbian novels, along with other things of interest. So, along with Katherine’s Guest Review Wednesday, I want to take a moment to tell you about the last of the comics I picked up at TCAF this year.

Namesake, by Isabelle Melançon and Megan Lavey-Heaton is about a young woman named Emma, who finds herself literally dragged into a story where she’ll need all her wits to survive. Emma is a Namesake, one of a groups of people with the ability to jump in an out of narratives. Without training, or seemingly, reason, Emma is dragged away from her world after a terrible event at the local library, where she was picking up her little sister, and dumped in a place no one in their right mind would ever expect to land. Emma finds herself in Oz.

Because the main portion of this volume of Namesake takes place in Oz, there is a great deal of exposition in which we are quickly caught up on the Oz cannon and filled in on current events in Oz. Almost immediately we meet old friends and new enemies, while Emma tries to figure out what the hell is going on.

For completely sensible reasons,  the second half of the first volume necessarily becomes an Oz fanfic, which might become tiresome if you are not a fan of Baum’s world. Nonetheless, there are some extremely interesting elements in this volume that kept me reading. Emma’s not a super strong protagonist out of the gate, but the librarian we meet in the beginning is. For various reasons I’m hanging on to see if she’ll be back. Also far stronger than Emma is her younger sister Elaine and in the final extra chapter of the volume, something occurs which dragged me right back into the story and has motivated me to get Volume 2.

And, aside from the individual characters, the world of the Namesakes is fascinating. We get the barest glimpse of the larger story in Volume 1. I hope that Volume 2 will gives us more of an idea of what is going on outside Oz. The opening of the first volume leads me to believe we will..and that there’s a lot to learn.

The art is very strong with a mostly black & white feel, with strategic use of color. At times, the color leaves one wondering what the significance is, which I quite like, as I do not believe anything we’re seeing is arbitrary.

Namesake is a webcomic that has been collected into several ebook and printt volumes, so you can read it from the beginning and decide if you too want to know the secret of the Namesakes.
