Yuri Manga: Rakuen Le Paradis Manga, Volume 9 (楽園 Le Paradis)

October 18th, 2012

Rakuen Le Paradis (楽園 Le Paradis) continues to be the magazine that scratches my “manga” itch best. Volume 9 continues the trend. From totally typical middle school drama, to adult relationships, and a whole lot in between, this magazine comes closest to hitting all my needs for entertainment.

“14-sai Koi” starts off this volume with an unusual look at a middle-school row between the girls and boys in class and the appallingly adorabale way in which the principal characters make up. If ever there was a story that could make me feel warm and fuzzy about young love…this is it. ^_^

“Collectors” continues to look at the wholly functional relationship of two women who are opposites in almost every way. This story makes me feel all warm and fuzzy about adult love. ^_^

In “Omoi no Kakera” Mayu is struggling with her feelings for Mika, but it’s Saki who wants to know who will hold her when she’s hurting?

“Seijukuki Jinmei Vega” hits what has to be an inevitable crisis, as Vega and Washimine-sempai both deal with what their relationship is, and how it affects Vega’s powers, upon which the whole town relies.

Nishi UKO’s second story, still around the subject of post-coitus smoking, lays a precarious platform for an adult relationship between two women who don’t seem to know what to think about the other…

From middle-school to middle age, Rakuen Le Paradis is the one magazine I can turn to to get “life.”

Revised NYCC Schedule

October 13th, 2012

Very quick note. I have spent the last few days in the hospital, and Rica is also sick, so our NYCC plans fell through. If all goes well, Saturday I will be there for a short time, but Rica’s signing sessions are canceled. I apologize for any inconvenience.

Also, my blogging schedule might be considerably altered for a while, due to health issues. My apologies about that as well.

Golondrina Manga, Volume 1 (ゴロンドリナイ)

October 8th, 2012

est em is an artist well-known for creating unconventional manga with a tinge of BL. How exciting for me, then, when I encountered Golondrina (ゴロンドリーナ ), an unconventional manga with a touch of Yuri.

The story begins as Chica, sobbing miserably in a bathroom, contemplates suicide. Blade to wrist, she just cannot bring herself to do it but, despite that, she still wants to die. We learn why in a flashback – Chica’s lover Maria has left her. Worse, she’s left only because Chica’s a woman. Yes, they were happy, but Maria wants a marriage, a child…a “normal” life. Chica is devastated.

She tries again to die, this time by stepping in front of traffic in the pouring rain. A car screeches to halt in front of her and the driver, an old man, yells at her – what does she think she’s doing? She tells him she’s trying to die, at which he throws her in the car and takes her back to his place to dry off.

Disconcerted, crying in her sleep, Chica wakes in the old man’s house. When he sees that she’s a girl, he realizes he’s made a mistake. He was going to make her into a Matador, but since she’s a girl…

The last straw snaps, and Chica demands that he take her seriously and teach her, because she wants to die in the ring.

Thus begins Golondrina, a manga about a young woman training to become a matadaor.

The art is classic est em – everyone is thin and less gangly than they have any right to be. Chica comes off as consistently hot-headed, but hard-working. Her friend Sechu, who is dead set against this, is still a good friend. We hardly had time to learn to hate Maria, but we are given plenty of time to learn about Antonio, Chica’s teacher. Is he a murderer, as Sechu says, or is he a man left behind in this life by a student, maybe lover? We learn a tantalizing bit about Antonio, but by the end of Volume 1, we don’t know much about him, really.

We do know that, despite being grossed out by bullfighting, Chica still says wants to die by the bull – in front of Maria if she can. Then we can see that her hard training is having some effect on her – even Sechu tells her she looks cool as she practices with the pink muleta.

Bullfighting is the ultimate in macho sports – will Chica make it into the ring at all? We’ll have to tune in to find out

Ratings:

Art – 8 The art is pleasantly realistic, without any attempt at photorealism
Story – 8
Characters – 8
Yuri – 2
Service – 1, which is to say there is some nudity, but really not at all of the Fanboy type. Everyone looks their age. This is a Josei manga, but even the guys aren’t particularly pretty. (See Art rating)

Overall – 8

Ultimately, as with any est em story – indeed, with most manga – it’s the characters that are the strength here. And, as my wife points out, pretty much anyone looks good in a suit of lights. If the cover is any indication, Chica will not be the exception to this.

Okazu/Yuricon New York Comic Con Schedule

October 7th, 2012

It’s time once again for us to squeeze ourselves into the poorly-laid out Javits Center in New York and run from corner to corner following an ever thinner trail of Manga and Anime presence at New York Comic Con.

NYCC has “absorbed” New York Anime Festival…in a Borgian sense, There is still a decent anime/manga presence on the schedule this year. What really got killed dead was last year’s fantastic LGBTQ chunk of programming. This year there’s a big 2 LGBTQ related panels, one about sexuality in comics and Prism-sponsored “Gay Marriage in Comics: Revolutionary or a Step Backwards?”.

First and most important – if I am not anywhere else, you will find me at the Prism Comics booth – Table 1875. Find me there if you can, because I’ll be giving away free Yuri doujinshi as long as supplies last.

Rica Takashima will be at Prism too, signing and sketching on promotional postcards designed for the digital release of Tokyo Love ~ Rica ‘tte Kanji!?. Here are the confirmed times when she’ll be there:

Thursday – 3 – 4 pm
Saturday – 4 – 5 pm

We’ll have Friday and Sunday times as soon as Prism gets back to us.

If I’m not at the Prism booth, you might want to look for me over at the JManga booth – Table 856.

The panels and events I’ll be attending are:

JManga Panel on the Future of Digital Manga
Saturday, October 13
4:00 pm – 5:00 pm
Location: 1A07

Vertical Presents Moyoco Anno Panel
 Date: Saturday, October 13
11:00 am – 12:00 pm
Location: 1A06

Rose of Versailles anime premier and Susan Napier’s discussion of Rose of Versailles:
Saturday, October 13
12:15 pm – 1:15 pm
Location: 1A04

Vertical, Yen Press, Viz, Kodansha and Funimation all have booths and, I presume panels, but generally industry panels are of little interest to me and every blogger in the anime/manga sphere will attend those hoping to be the first to break the news of…whatever, so I’ll be skipping them.

I will update Rica’s signing sessions asap. We hope to see you there!
