Yuri Manga

Octave, Volume 5 is slated to hit the shelves in late August. I’m really looking forward to this volume! We’re well past the “happily-ever-after” bits into real life.

A few weeks ago, I mentioned that a third volume of Hinagiku Junshin Jogakuen is out. The reason I never reviewed Volume 2 is that every time I read a chapter in Comic Ryuu it seemed to be about the elfin teacher, not about the relationship between Ami and Yui. But, late in Volume 1 a new character was introduced (whose name I have completely forgotten.) She was like a mini-Yui. Well, the cover of Volume 3, probably falsely, indicates that having failed to get Yui, Ami has turned towards whateverhernameis.

I cannot believe this series is still running…

Yuri Hime Wildrose 6 is slated for release next month, as is Tokimeki Mononoki Gakuen, Volume 2 and a collection of Aoki Mitsue’s stories from Yuri Hime, Princess Princess.

I get a lot of questions about the overall popularity or sales of various manga put out by Ichijinsha. I don’t have any numbers to give you, folks, sorry. My bet is that even the most popular series aren’t reaching into the tens of thousands. However, no one can deny that Ichijinsha is putting out a lot of manga these days. They must be paying for themselves, don’t you think?

New manga magazine Comic Sumomo is launching with a high school girls love story by High School Girls creator Oshima Towa. The new magazine will hit shelves in Japan on August 10.

Oh, phew! There’s Maria-sama ga Miteru news. I was worried. The fifth omnibus volume of the manga is now available. The manga picks up again in the September volume of The Margaret (ザマーガレット) magazine. That will probably be out next month in Japan, it might take a little longer to get to the US. Just as a refresher, the manga stopped with the graduation of the Rosas: Youko, Eriko and Sei. The series will pick up with Yumi’s second year. You know what that means, right? We’re going to have to go through Rainy Blue…again. Sigh.

Of course, this is all to raise interest in the series for the late October release of the live-action movie. I can’t wait to see that. (I wonder what airfares to Tokyo are for October…?)

Yuri Events

This very weekend is the 19th Tokyo Lesbian and Gay Film Festival. If you do get a chance to see anything there, be sure to tell us how it was!

I know that my own appearances have dwindled down to nothing. That is largely because of  an obsessive need to work now that I am again employed. Also, the whole lack of permanent employment kind of made it hard for me to travel. My apologies. If you want me to appear at an event near you, please be considerate of that – I don’t have an unlimited budget to travel, so if you are running an event, even a token offer of a stipend for food/hotel/travel can make the difference between me being there or not. I get an amazing amount of invitations that don’t account for this. (Come to Australia to do a panel! Um…)

In any case, here’s a few things in the coming months where you can find me and ALC Publishing!

Fresh Fruit Festival Art Show – July 20-31, New York City:

100% Yuri Manga by ALC Publishing will be part of the art show at the Leslie Lohman Gallery, July 20-31. Unlike art on the walls, our books will be out and open and available to read. Please drop by and see the great artists (including our own Rica Takashima!) who have contributed to this group art show. I was at this event last year for the opening and had an absolute blast. I hope you’ll drop by.

New York Comic-Con/New York Anime Festival – October 8-10, New York City:

I am going to be there working for the folks at Media-Blasters. I have applied for a Yuri panel, but have not yet heard back. Email them and tell them you want one! In any case, you should be able to find me at MB’s small city of tables.

MangaNEXT – October 29-31, East Brunswick, NJ:

I have *no* idea what I’ll be doing there. I volunteered to work PR (social media side, of course) but we’ll see what I’m actually doing. I hope to have a Yuri panel, because there’s a LOT of Yuri manga coming out in Japan now.

There’s the schedule right now. No, no Otakon, sorry.

2011, SDCC is on the list. I really gotta get there and see how it stacks up to Comiket. :-)

And YNN correspondent socchan reminds us that today is Femslash Day as celebrated by Femslash Con, a remote chat-based event. There is a Yuri Panel tonight 11PM EDT (GMT -5) in their Panel Room 2. It will be hosted by the (in)famous and awesome writer Dreiser and if I can, I’ll pop in, too! You’ll need to download and enable the Paltalk chat software to participate. Visit the Femslash con site to find out what you need and where you need to go.

Okazu News

Thanks to everyone who has written in to say that they like the new header. (Once again my thanks to Lissa for her work on it. It’s absolutely grin-inducing.)

Here’s the question – would any of you be interested in a Okazu t-shirt with the design? We could do Okazu Super/Hero shirts, maybe, as well. Think about it. We’re coming up on an anniversary here and I want to do something special.

Other News

This morning, before I started the YNN report, I read this great article about Internet journalism and comments, and my thoughts immediately turned to you, my readers.

I do my best to present all the Yuri I can here. I try to think critically about it – even going so far as to parse my own biases and explain the *whys* of why I feel about things and what, exactly, I like and dislike about it. I try to give my comments context, color, and a clear sense of humor. (There’s a reason the picture in the top right of the blog has me grinning. That’s the expression I try to blog with – this had better be fun, or why am I doing it!? )

When I post, I often provide history, artistic and literary background, I delve deeper into a thing than just “This was good. I liked it.” Blame my teachers – I was writing full-blown research papers from the age of 11. (Thank you Mrs. Ziegler!)

And of course, I write this weekly YNN report, which is pretty straightforward reporting – with editorial commentary because it’s my blog, duh. lol I admit to mistakes, fix errors and generally try to be as authentic as possible. I welcome feedback and input from you.

In effect, I strive to create good reading. A balance of the news and critical commentary, with a background of research and overall transparency. A Yuri magazine, if you will.

Of *course* I get trolls in the comments here at Okazu. I publish them 99% percent of the time and really, the only time I don’t is if they contain links to places I don’t want this blog to link to like porn sites and multi-level marketing schemes or when they contain threats of physical violence. The trolls sometimes are funny, sometimes are sad and are always indicative of the fact that a particular post made someone, somewhere feel *something*. Mostly anger, but that’s still a kind of engagement. ^_^;

But, you know, most of the comments here are wonderful. You – the readers of Okazu, my readers – are such a fun, intelligent crowd. You’re people I’m thrilled to meet in person, people I’d be happy to have over for lunch. You are my Heros, my advocates, my conversation partners and in many cases, my friends.

I may well be the luckiest blogger in the world.

Okazu is nearing an 8th anniversary, so I just wanted to take this opportunity to say to all of you – thank you.

You’re the best audience on the Internet.

That’s a wrap for this week.

Become a Yuri Network Correspondent by sending me any Yuri-related news you find. Emails go to anilesbocon01 at hotmail dot com. Not to the comments here, please, or they might be forgotten or missed. There’s a reason for this madness. This way I know you are a real human, not Anonymous (which I do not encourage – stand by your words with your name!) and I can send you a YNN correspondent’s badge.

Thanks to all of you – you make this a great Yuri Network!

Shoujo Manga Magazine Yuri Watch: Blue Friends

July 17th, 2010

Probably a few of you are familiar with Ribon , the monthly shoujo manga magazine.

One of the current series is “Blue Friends,” (ブルーフレンズ) a story that starts out Yuri (and is quickly destined to leave it, but for now…)

Ayumu is good at sports and popular and Misuzu is slightly creepy, totally distant from everyone and hates men. In chapter 1, Misuzu kisses Ayumu, who spends most of chapter 2 wondering what
it meant. Misuzu says it was just between friends, but Ayumu doesn’t know, really, if it was.

Now, not only are the other girls talking about them, making snide comments about are they “that way,” they are also plain old mean about Misuzu, so Ayumu has to keep defending her over and over. When Misuzu drives a guy who confesses to liking Ayumu away, Ayumu begins to wonder if she’s picked up a stalker….

Ayumu’s feelings are totally confused and although it turns out that Misuzu was, really, acting in her best interests, she’s really not sure what to make of the new threat in the form of a transfer student that keeps hinting about something terrible in Misuzu’s past. And, unbeknownst to Ayumu, Misuzu is getting threatening messages in her locker.

Blue Friends, by Eban Fumi, is a relatively new manga that runs in Ribon. It’s only three chapters old and is already moving away from the fake Yuri into something else. There’s at least one horrible secret that will either split the two of them up or possibly bring them closer. It will, I have no doubt, also be the reason that Ayumu hates men. I expect it to be vile.

My guess is that the story will ultimately be non-Yuri, but I don’t think I’ve even seen fake Yuri in Ribon before, so I’ll follow it until it becomes intolerable…which ought to be the next chapter. :-)

Here’s the first chapter online on the Ribon site so you can decide for yourself.

This is the first of a few shoujo manga stories supposedly with Yuri running this summer. I’ve got another one on tap…I’ll let you know how it goes. :-)

This one started out promising, but quickly devolved. I’ll check back if something actually develops.

New Okazu Header by Lissa Pattilo!

July 16th, 2010

Another Twitter triumph! Not only can I communicate with Yuri manga artists quickly, not only do I have awesome conversations with other anime and manga bloggers, industry folk and notables…not only do I have amazing amounts of high-utility fun on the world’s most annoying chat room, erm, social networking platform…I got me a new header, too!

One day, Lissa Patillo said on twitter that she felt creative, but had no projects. Half-jokingly I said, “You can always make me a new Okazu header!” And so she did.

So, let me say that 1) she’s a delight to work with (in case you have some paying work for her, hint hint); 2) her reviews are a blast to read, and; 3) she’s loads of fun to talk to.

Follow, friend, connect whatever, Social Media works. I got a new header to prove it. :-) I’ll be playing with it a bit in the days to come to see what I can add to the mix. Okazu has always been my playground for experimentation, so why not?

Thanks again Lissa! It’s going to make me happy every time I look at it.

Yuri Manga: Yuri Hime S, Volume 13

July 15th, 2010

Each issue of Yuri Hime S becomes precious now, as we reach the end of its run.  In the case of Volume 13, the cover makes me really glad this magazine is going away. Following the cover is “Konohanateikitan” (of which there will be a second chapter later on,)  which I skipped, as I always do.

This takes us to “Fufu,” that pervasively cheerful story about two adult women in an adult relationship doing entirely domestic things together. In this chapter a surprise visit from Kina’s older sister turns a day off into chaos. We do learn that Kana, Kina’s older sister, is also a woman who loves women, so that particular hurdle does not have to be faced. Instead, Kana makes herself annoying in other ways. :-) This is followed by a few shorts in which we learn that Kana has considerable charm herself, and is not above taking what is offered freely.

The next few items I skipped, which brings us to “Marriage Black,” the Juliet x Juliet story starring crime family daughters Lu-Tei and Riricia. This story plays out like pretty much every other West Side Story out there, swinging from pointing guns at one another to near sex on the floor, with a promise of murder. There’s a good chance this is going to be obvious, but that’s okay. As long as the ride is fun.

In “Futari to Futari” Yoshitomi Akihito replays his current fetish. Again. There is a happy ending and I hope we can put this behind us and move on to a story that doesn’t suck now.

“Kaichou to Fukukaichou” does something unexpected, in the form of the President doing something unexpected.  During the school festival, the butchy President ends up wearing a maid outfit and the rather femme VP finds herself decked out as a cool latter-day samurai. In some kind of climax, during the opening ceremonies, Prez emphatically states in front of everyone in the school that the VP is hers!  At the end of the day, the VP asks what she actually is to the President. I await the answer anxiously.

In the next story I read, which was “Shinigamai Alice,” the protagonist puts herself in harm’s way to draw her death-god love interest to her. That works, and they spend a night in domestic bliss as a reward.

“Osanajimi to Yobanaide” continues to be a drippy looking story about a love polygon at school, by an artist who draws drippy looking stories about love polygons at school.

I have got to stop reading “Cassiopeia Dolce.” I have no idea why I do read it, except that the art and font are clean, so after something like “Osanajimi to Yobanaide,” it’s easy to read. Anyway, Sonia leaves never to return, until she returns and becomes a permanent member of the staff at the store

For the twelfth chapter of “Flower Flower” in a row, Nina’s behavior towards Shuu starts to thaw.

It’s a truism that nature abhors the lack of a Prince at a girl’s school, so when their prince leaves to go to the Sakurazuka school, the characters in “Okkake x Girls” have to rush to fill the void.  Mayu is happy to oblige.

EVERYTHING in “Zettai Shoujo Astoria” is DRAMATIC and people SCREAM alot and there’s the PENDANT that is very SIGNIFICANT and perhaps, one day, we’ll LEARN what it is all ABOUT. (Or not, my wife points out.)

“Honey Crush” comes to an end as Mitsu finally ceases to haunt our world and passes on to the next. I hope Enma is kind to her. Kyoko will probably become a telephone psychic and do a late night TV show.

Which brings us to the huge 2-page ad that informs us that Comic Yuri Hime, Volume 21 and Yuri Hime S, Volume 14 will be one and the same.

I very much look forward to the consolidation and hope that Yuri Hime trends toward adults trumps Yuri Hime S‘s butt. More “Fufu!” “Less Yuruyuri!” <– New battle cry.

Yuri Manga: Yuri Hime Selection, Volume 2

July 14th, 2010

Like the first volume of Yuri Hime Selection, Yuri Hime Selection, Volume 2 is a collection of the random widows and orphans of the two Yuri Hime magazines. These are one-shots that didn’t have enough longevity to manage volumes of their own.

The collection itself is a nice, thick volume of a little over 360 pages. It’s smaller than the magazine issues, about A4 in size, so it feels less cumbersome to lug about. It contains 14 stories, almost all of which I remembered as soon as I began reading. Amazingly, not all of them are stories about school girls. Not all of them – but most of them, let’s be real – are Story A, either. However, even as Story A, they were more fully formed than just about anything in the first volume of this reboot anthology.

As I say, there are several stories that focus on adults, including at least one by Hiyori Otsu, “Maple Love,” which was amusing right up until the last bon mot when it tanked (although not fatally.) This trend also includes “Imprinting no Coffee” by Yotsuhara Furiko and Uso Kurata’s “Kusari ha mou Iranai,” among others. There’s a number of May-December romances – it’s up to you to decide if they count as “about adults.”

Overall, this was a pretty strong volume, with stories by some of the best-selling names Yuri Hime has to offer right now. There’s a decent variety of art work, and because many of the artists have had time to grow more confident and the genre as a whole has evolved since those early Yuri Shimai days, this collection functions well as a “glimpse into the state of Yuri” and a nice introduction to the YH lineup.

If you’re not sure you’d like Yuri Hime, this would make an excellent collection with which to test the waters. It’s much stronger and more entertaining than the first volume of this series.

Ratings:

Variable, averaging 9

As an anthology of Yuri one-shots, and despite the not terribly convincing cover that proclaims “Our secret love,” Yuri Hime Selection, Volume 2 is very good. I wasn’t running to read Volume 3 (I have to budget myself a *little*) but it is on my Amazon JP Yuri Wishlist. I’ll make you a deal – if you get it for me to review, I’ll send it to you when I’m done with it. This way you get my review and the book! ^_^
