Yuri Manga: Wakemonaku Kurushikunaruno (理由(わけ)もなく悲しくなるの)

March 15th, 2015

I’m finally getting WmKnnto sit down with a few of the wrap-up of the Pure Yuri Anthology Hirari volumes (before setting out to read the new -yay! – volumes Hirari is putting out). The first one I picked up was Wakemonaku Kurushikunaruno (理由(わけ)もなく悲しくなるの), a collection of stories by Hakamada Mera.

As is sort of typical for me, I didn’t really grasp the continuity of these stories in the quarterly anthology releases. It’s not that I didn’t know it was a series, it’s just that I tend to read magazine chapters in a vacuum and if there is a continuity, the collection will make that plain to me. As it did here.

Tsubaki doesn’t really quite fit in with her group of friends at school, and she’s put off by their meanness towards a half-Japanese classmate, Kikuka. Kikuka wears earphones all the time, and Tsubaki wonders if she ever hears their snark. She gets to know Kikuka, and finds that, of course she hears what they say. Tsubaki and Kikuka become closer, forcing a blowout confrontation with Tsubaki’s circle of friends…she chooses Kikuka over them.

Tsubaki is starting to have un-friend-like feelings for Kikuka, and complicating this, it turns out that Kikuka is a fashion model. The girls who once ostracized her now gather around. Tsubaki is torn between jealousy and desire and she and Kikuka have to have it out between themslves in order to repair their friendship.

We then turn towards an unnamed classmate who is clearly meant to be seen as overweight and dumpy. We see the birth of a fetish and an unrequited attraction when she sees a sweaty Kikuka changing out of her gym clothes. The fact that she is not named bugs me  – she might as well be called “plot complication girl.” She apologizes, the chapter ends with nothing more than a heavy girl with a sweat fetish, what?

Moving our gaze back to Tsubaki and Kikuka, they kiss one day, then stress about it, for a while. Kikuka admits that she’s going to be leaving school for modeling, which makes Tsubaki mightily unhappy. It is our unnamed heavy girl who forces Tsubaki to deal with her feelings. She tells Tsubaki that she envies her, being able to be close to Kikuka. Tsubaki realizes that the “pain for no real reason” (the title of the book) she’s been feeling has a reason after all and suddenly makes a decision about Kikuka. They decide to be happy, together, while they can be.

The final chapter of the book once again turns to the heavy girl – I looked long and hard for a name, and she really never gets one. But after facing herself, her unfulfillable desires and living a life full of nothing, she decides she’ll go to school after all.

One hopes that she will find herself in years to come – and I’d actually kinda like a volume about her, now that I think about it. Perhaps, starting with a name.

So this series began with an outsider…then caved on that and made her popular, so it added another outsider. The end feeling is that the intent was well-meaning, but the execution lacked conviction.

Ratings:

Art – 7 Still Hakamada -sensei’s signature style, but so much better than the carnival heads from days of yore.
Characters – 5 The characters were set up to be in some other story and never really fit this one.
Story – 5 It had postential. I blame her editor for not forcing it to fulfill it.
Service – The fetish chapter, so 4?
Yuri – 6

Overall – 6

This was a chapter that became a story, but it needed to have been planned out better. And it might have been, for all we know, had Hirari continued.

Yuri Manga

The May issue of Comic Yuri Hime (コミック百合姫 2015年 05 月号) hits the shelves in Japan next week.

Ichijinsha is releasing Inugami-san to Nekoyama-san, Volume 4 (犬神さんと猫山さん)by Kuzushiro from Yuri Hime Comics. Also by Kuzushiro, from the Rex Comics imprint,  Kyou mo Futari ha Nakayoshi desu.(今日も2人は仲良しです).

Ichinjinsha is a busy group – they are pounding out Yuri collections from creators not (yet) writing for Comic Yuri Hime,  A quick glance at the artists’ works and and based only on the titles of a few coming out soon, I gather these will be more adult in nature, but moe in style. I point this out because if you are shipping these, wait to see what the covers look like before you decide – adult content + moe art is, perhaps, not always a wise choice to put in the mail:

Ai Rabu Yuu Yori Aishiteru (愛羅武勇より愛してる) by Kumichou.

Naturize – (ナチュリーズ) by Aoto Hibiki.

XXX shita hodo Kawai Kimi ga (×××したいほど可愛い君が) by Kazuga Sunao.

Tosaku Shoujo Shoukogun (倒錯少女症候群)

Of special note is a two-part comic based on the popular Yuri visual novel, Okujou no Yuri Yurei-san. From Liar Soft and Itou Hachi we get Okujou no Yuri Yurei-san SIDE A Mou Hitotsu no Yuritopia (屋上の百合霊さんSIDE A もうひとつのユリトピア ) and Okujou no Yuri Yurei-san SIDE B Nakayoshi Quiz (屋上の百合霊さんSIDE B 仲良しクイズ). Especially notable, these are being published by Shinsokan under the Hirari imprint, which happily, does not seem to be dead just yet. ^_^

And again another Kuzushiro title, Volume 5 of Kimi no Tamenara Shineru (姫のためなら死ねる) her Heian gag comedy series, from Bamboo Comics.

Before I forget, one more popular Yuri manga artist is trying her hand with digital comics on Note.mu. You can find Momono Moto‘s (Rainy Song) work there.

And for our Polish readers, Morinaga Milk’s GIRL FRIENDS, Volume 3 is out this month from Studio JG!

Via Senior YNN Correspondent Erin S., “a short comic about witches and wishes and wanting things” which I found to be delightful. ^_^

Here’s a new Kickstarter for Love In All Forms: The Big Book of Growing Up Queer. It’s about a third of the way to funding, and a mere $7 will get you a DRM-free pdf of the book. That’s a good deal.

Yuri Manga: Whispered Words, Volume 3 (English)

March 10th, 2015

ww31Yay!! Woo!! Other terms of exuberance! We have reached Whispered Words, Volume 3, out in English from One Peace Books! Whee!!

But before we celebrate, let us take a look back at how far we’ve come.

In Volume 1, we met Sumika, who is tall, athletic and hopelessly in love with her best friend, Ushio who never even considers Sumika as a possibility. Ushio isn’t trying to be cruel, but she is sure that Sumi is “normal” as she terms it and doesn’t want her to get roped into the negative treatment she’s come to expect from the other students.

In Volume 2, it becomes increasingly obvious to everyone even, eventually, them, that Sumika and Ushio are in love with each other. Even as they start taking tentative steps to be together, life gets in the way.

In Volume 3 as Sumi, Ushio and their friends all start thinking about graduation, Ushio’s grandmother is injured and asks for Ushio to come and take care of her, potentially splitting her and Sumi apart just as they are starting to have something to stay together for. Ushio’s brother reunites with an old flame and their grandmother puts pressure on them to marry.

While all that is going on, Sumi runs for Student Council President. When rivals for Student Council President use dirty tactics, and a member of the Karate Club gets in a fight, Sumi feels her best action is to remove herself from the contest. To everyone’s surprise, Ushio steps up and takes her place in the election. There can be no underhanded tactics, after all, Ushio’s been out since middle school.

The end of this volume is everything we could really have hoped for. Recognition that life is not easy – it even has some real-life homophobia, so when love wins the day it’s just that much sweeter. It’s a story we’ve been told a million times since we were kids, but it’s rare that we get to see it in a Yuri manga – sure, the real world can be awful, but love makes us strong. And so it does. Also weak. And stupid. But sometimes it works out  and when it does, it’s totally worth it. Just like this manga series.

The third volume goes on sale officially on March 17th. Pre-orders have already shipped.

I promised you – I swore to you – that this manga was worth it. Trust me, the ending is just as much fun in English as it was in Japanese. ^_^

Thanks very much to Robert of One Peace books for the review copy, it was even better than I had hoped. ^_^ If you’re still waiting to get a copy of this series, take this opportunity to check the offerings out on the new Yuricon Store, where Volume 1 and Volume 2 are currently listed with multiple vendors and Kindle Editions are also available!

Yuricon Store News

March 8th, 2015

Well, here we are.

The Yuricon Store is informally open. ^_^

This is a soft launch, so there’s still a lot to do. But the English Manga, Digital Manga, English Anime and Yuri Literature sections are up-to-date (for the moment.) The Japanese Manga section has a lot of titles, but is still in development and Light Novels and Drama CDs are as filled as they are getting for a bit. We’ll revisit them in Q2. Also planned for Q3 is a Yuri Goods section.

A couple of important notes about the Store:

1) First, read this page

This page contains explanations of the sections, the vendor choices and other basic questions. I did my best to address the most obvious questions you might have. This includes things like how to search for titles and what you are seeing on a page. You can use the Tags to search for similar items. And there is a search feature – you can limit the search to items on the Store only, or the whole site. Search only works for Titles in the Store right now.  You can Search for Titles, authors, publishers and imprints – in English and Japanese. We’re working on formatting results even more helpfully now.. Remember, Work in Progress. ^_^

2) We welcome feedback.

If you don’t see something you’d hoped to find, write us via our feedback form.

Correction: We welcome feedback as long as it does not begin “Why don’t you have X item?” ^_^; Answer: Work in Progress.

If items are not available through the retailers we’re using, or out of print, or non-existent,they may just not be on the Shop. Sorry, but there is no available Ikkitousen:DD Complete Set, even though there is a complete set for Ikkitousen, Ikkitousen:GG and Ikkitousen:XX. Maddening, I know. But I can’t fix licensing. All we can do is give you the most comprehensive listings for Yuri possible.

3) The Store is a Work in Progress.

If you see an inconsistency, a mistake, a typo, anything that needs correction, by all means send us feedback! But do be polite about it, thanks! I’ll get back to you as soon as possible. Just consider yourself a delta tester and feel free to let us know where we can improve. Thanks!

Thank you to all the Heroes and Superheros and Patrons and Sponsors and our webmaster Lissa for helping us get this far.  Already, the Yuricon Store is the most comprehensive set of online listings for Yuri anime and manga. And with your continued support, it’ll just keep getting better.

Yuri Anime

From Senior YNN Correspondent Eric P., Funimation is releasing the first “Girls with guns on the run” anime series by Bee Train Noir Complete Series on Blu-Ray. If you’ve never seen this, you really should. The music, the voice actors (and the story, in a nutty way) are all fantastic.

Yuri Manga

From YNN Correspondent Tomo K. we have some fun news about another series by the creator of MurciealgoOurTube is a gag 4-koma that features four high school girls. Itsuki is the heroine with superhuman abilities who’s always copying stunts she sees on Youtube.

Itsuki and Madoka are obviously a couple, but Madoka is also after Setsuka, Itsuki’s cousin. Setsuka likes Itsuki and is thus jealous of Madoka. The fourth character is Rui, another lethal weapon of sorts who helps out Setsuka whenever Setsuka gives her a Tirol chocolate.

The basic plot is that Itsuki and Madoka go berserk to do something, and then end up being stopped and punished by Setsuka and Rui. The series is complete, but volume 2 was never published.”

Volume 1 is also only available on Amazon JP from 3rd party sellers, but this definitely sounds like the kind of thing I’ll trawl through Book-Off for.

The creators of the new Jem and the Holograms comic for IDW Publishing (which debuts this month) have gone on record that in this version, Kimber and Storm are a couple.

For those of you enjoying the adult content of Mebae, Volume 4 (メバエ) is  hitting shelves in April.

I have no idea if these are going to have any Yuri, but a further Madoka tie-in serie, 魔法少女たると☆マギカ The Legend of “Jeanne d’ Arc” is too interestingly titled for me to resist. If you also are interested, you can find Volume 1 and Volume 2 on Amazon JP. The cover on Volume 2 is wonderful. YNN Correspondent David M. weighs in with this news: “The Puella Magi Jeanne D’Arc series will be published in the US by Yen Press, with the first volume coming out 21 April. Amazon.com even has a description (an intriguing idea, if done well, and one hinted at the end of the series).”

YNN Correspondent David M wants to remind us that Torikaebaya, Volume 6 (とりかえ・ばや) is out.  My copy sits there, taunting me, while I avoid meeting it’s eyes. I think I’m scared of it.

Senior Correspondent Erin S wants you to know about an interesting new anthology about early internet fandom experiences, I Was a Teenage Gargoyle.

Jamie Lynn Lano, who lived the dream, moved to Japan and became an assistant to the creator of the Prince of Tennis manga is now distributing her book, Princess of Tennis in print and ebook format through Chromatic Press’s Sparkler Monthly site.

I have absolutely NO idea what this is like, but it caught my eye (as you’ll understand in a second.) A very few Japanese novels are being released in Japanese through Amazon.com’s Kindle platform. Looking through some lesbian themed novels, I found Anna and Erica Best Friend Syndrome (Japanese Romance Fiction Japanese edition.) It’s 99 cents. I should probably just get it.

On Saturday, March 7th, Gallery Nucleus in Alhambra, CA will be holding a Legend of Korra art show, including this adorable Korra x Asami piece by Korra co-creator Bryan Konietzko.

A K-Drama has created controversy with a lesbian kiss. You can watch Seonam Girls High School Investigators on Viki.com.

YNN Correspondent Ichigo_69 points toward this NPO in Japan – Good Aging Yells (GAY) for the Out in Japan project, but I found this Lush-sponsored event We Believe in Love, just as interesting. Clearly this NPO can bring in the sponsors, and money, as we all know, speaks loudly.

Let’s end on a positive note – The Ministry of Education in Japan has just announced that they will require all schools in Japan to support LGBTQ kids. A major step forward.
