Usotsuki Lily Manga, Volume 11 (うそつきリリィ)

February 1st, 2015

Uso11In Usotsuki Lily, Volume 10, we met Kanae and Keiko, two women who clearly like each other, but who don’t know how to tell one another, and Taiyou, the young man who asks Kanae out while working for her.

At the beginning of Volume 11 of Usotsuki Lily (うそつきリリィ), this is the status quo: Taiyou is in mega-bummer mood because, although he really likes Kanae, he knows that she and Keiko like each other. And he can see that, although he and Kanae are “going out”, they aren’t really. But he really likes Kanae.

He asks his older sister for advice and, rather sensibly, she suggests owning the relationship. But it’s Ten, the lead, En’s, younger brother, who makes the real breakthrough in Taiyou’s funk. Ten is open about liking guys. Although “gay” is not used here – dousei 同姓- “homosexuality”or “same-sex” is. Ten explains that he’s on Keiko’s side.

Taiyou and Ten embark upon an ill-advised plot to get Keiko and Kanae together. Let me be clear here. I, personally, believe every single plot complication in all of fiction that is not “tell the person the truth” is ill-advised. ^_^

So Taiyou and Ten (who actually is interested in Taiyou) appear before Kanae to tell her they are going out. Kanae is confused by this, unsurprisingly. To convince her, Taiyou kisses Ten, at which Keiko appears, and kicks him in the head while shouting the PG-rated version of “What the fuck is wrong with you!?!”

Keiko yells at Taiyou that Kanae chose him instead of her, so he’d better treat her well. Kanae is shocked to hear this – yes, of course she likes Keiko, but didn’t know she felt the same, etc, etc. And so, the chapter comes to an end with Kanae and Keiko together. Taiyou girlfriendless and Ten having been kissed by the guy he actually likes but as a fake thing.

One of you lovely folks mentioned in the comments of the Volume 10 review that this arc ended all d’awww… and I see your point, that Keiko and Kanae are together at the end and all, but felt that Ten takes absolutely unnecessary lumps in the process. In fact, he’s the best character of the arc, being the only one able to see the truth, speak the truth and handle the truth. In my mere two volumes of this series, Ten is my favorite character – and my candidate for “I hope he get plucked out of this needlessly complicated drama and plopped into a nice story.” ^_^

But there we go – we know from Girl’s Lily that Keiko and Kanae will go on to live happily ever after and consider marriage. So for them, definitely, d’awww.

Ratings are for this arc only:

Art – 7
Character – 7 for everyone but Ten, who is a 9.
Story – 6 Still ‘Story A’ with adults, and the handwave of young men as catalysts.
Yuri – 5 Same as above
Service – 1 Taiyou and Ten kissing, for the crowd that is interested.

Overall – 7

Not bad, certainly addresses some real issues.  There was a lot of room for improvement, but for a Margaret book, pleasantly positive, reasonably realistic.

And while we’re talking Yuricon, the Shop Update is moving forward apace. Beta testing will begin  in mere days.  And then I will spend my days and nights adding manga until my hands seize up. You can be sure, from now on, every time I report on new manga, I’m going to be thinking “D’oh! Gotta get that in the Shop.” ^_^

Yuri Manga (D’oh!)

Amano Shuninta’s Ayame 14 (あやめ 14) first volume hit shelves this month, along with Ohsawa Yayoi’s Spice Girls (スパイスガールズ), both from Yuri Hime Comics

Hitting shelves next week, also from Yuri Hime Comics, is The 13th volume of Yuri Yuri (ゆるゆり). Later this month, we’ll see Takemiya Jin’s Chou Chou Nan Nan (喋喋喃喃).

From Ryuu Comics we’ll be seeing  Manfuku Yuri (満腹百合) which appears to be about a female couple and food. This sounds perfect to me! I can’t wait to read it. ^_^

From Hirari Comics, we can look forward to Engekibu no Majou to Kishi (演劇部の魔女と騎士)  Seijun Shoujo Paradigm (聖純少女パラダイム) and Watashi no Iyana Tomodachi (私の嫌いなおともだち). How exciting that Hirari is doing what they said they do and releasing the volumes of the stories we were enjoying so much!

Sailor Moon

Here are utterly useless Outer-Senshi-themed Sailor Moon things that you need to buy. I know you do, because I do, too. ^_^

While we’re doing some Sailor Moon wallowing, via YNN Correspondent Elizabeth F, here is ANN’s report on the third Sailor Moon Musical.

Other News

Via YNN Correspondent Serge, here is an overview of an interview with Ikuhara Kunihiko and Morishima Akiko on Yuri Kuma Arashi. Worth reading.

In 2011, a pilot for a Wonder Woman TV series was filmed. There was a lot of talk about it, and discussion of lead Adrienne Palicki’s costume. We saw a really cool teaser…and then DC and NBC, remembered girls had cooties and the project died. Well the entire pilot is available to watch online. Go watch.

And from YNN Correspondent JRBrown, here is Bara manga artist Tagame Gengoroh on his newest manga series. While bara (which is by gay men for gay men and usually portrays large, beefy and/or hairy men) is not usually within our playground, this series is addressing real issues of gay families. Ototo no Otto, My Young Brother’s Husband, is the story of a Japanese man who moved to Canada and married another man there, bringing his husband back to Japan to meet his twin brother.  This sounds extremely interesting to me. Thanks JRB!

Yuri Manga: Mebae, Volume 3 (メバエ)

January 30th, 2015

mebae3I’ve been reading tons of manga, but been so have busy with the Yuricon Shop that I haven’t reviewed much and I’ve been mostly watching Star Trek: Voyager re-runs on Amazon Prime (I know, I know, but it’s not as bad as I remember) so I find myself at the end of the day tired, with nothing to say.

And since I have nothing nice to say, I thought I’d write a  quick review of the Yuri manga anthology Mebae, Volume 3. (メバエ) ^_^

So, you know when you’re watching a martial arts movie and the obligatory love scene comes on and you just sort of cringe because….ewww? That’s pretty much how Mebae, Volume 3 strikes me.

Here we are, going along and there’s a character who seems okay and the lover and they’d be kind of cute together and then the art goes all TITS and CROTCH and what the HELL is THAT even?!? and you’ve lost the moment.

The one story I genuinely liked involved a house shooting out into Earth orbit and no sex at all. Why it’s in the volume, I have no idea, there’s nothing to indicate the characters are anything but friends, but I was glad it was. Got my mind off the really confused anatomy lessons of the rest of the book. ^_^;

Ratings:

Art – No. Just, no.
Story – If you took out the nasty sex, a few of them aren’t awful, but most of them still are.
Characters – 0 Variable, from nil to nada.
Yuri – 6 There’s darn little affection for all the nude antics.
Service – 101232530

Overall – 3 A solid meh.

I had some small dregs of hope that bits of it might be worth reading, but it really isn’t. Oh well.

Request for Guest Reviewer for Citrus — FOUND

January 28th, 2015

Guest Reviewer has been found and approved, but thanks to everyone for jumping right in!~

Hi Okazu Readers! I am in desperate need of a Guest Reviewer and I hope one of you can help me.

As you know, I do my best to bare my biases here on Okazu when I have them and explain why I don’t and do like manga when it’s relevant. Every once in a blue moon, I come across a manga or anime that just really makes me unhappy and I can’t find a civil word to say about it.  Last year for instance, the Sakura Trick anime just made me deeply uncomfortable and I didn’t want to have to watch it.

I understand that many of you love Citrus, by Saburouta. So much so, in fact, that it is currently selling as the #1 Romance Manga! Congrats to Seven Seas and Saburouta-sensei on that.

number1

But, you see, I have been reading it since the beginning and..I really don’t like it.

For the several people who are super jazzed about reading a review by me on this series – notice I have never once reviewed it in Japanese. That ought to be a clear indication of my feelings. To be honest, I haven’t even bought the Japanese volumes. I like it that little.

I don’t like either Mei or Yuzu, I don’t find their attraction appealing. It reads like just another incest story to me and I honestly to do do not care if they live happily ever after or get hit by a truck and die. Reading Citrus has, since the day it debuted, made me deeply unhappy. I don’t like reviewing things that make me unhappy. And, I know from experience, many readers get personally offended when I have the nerve to not enjoy something they like.

So…I’m turning to you, my readers. If you have 1) Purchased a copy of Citrus, Volume 1 and 2) enjoyed it, I invite you to be a Guest Reviewer on Okazu. Please read the Okazu Guest Review Guidelines first and follow the instructions there. (You don’t have to convince me that the series is worth reviewing, only that you should be the one to do it!)

And, please, I beg of you, do not comment here attempting to convince that Citrus is awesome. I’m glad for you that you enjoy it, please respect that fact that I have actually been reading it in Comic Yuri Hime and I just don’t like it. Thanks very much. ^_^

Thanks again to all you amazing folks who volunteered! We’ll have a review up shortly.
