Coming Soon from Nozomi/RightStuf and Viki.com – Rose of Versailles

September 12th, 2012

Nozomi/RightStuf and Viki.com, the online streaming site that carries Riyoko Ikeda’s “Dear Brother”) have jointly announced the licensing of Ikeda’s classic tale of the French Revolution, Rose of Versailles.

RightStuf’s Coming Soon Page for RoV includes links to the trailer and a button to submit questions to Riyoko Ikeda, to be answered by the legendary artist herself.

Viki.com is premiering the opening episode at New York Comic-Com on October 13, followed by a Q&A session with Prof. Susan Napier. (I’ve already spoken with Prof. Napier and asked her a few questions written by myself, Katherine H. and Erin S. I’ll hope that she’ll have time to answer a few of them for us.)

What a decade the 2010’s are turning out to be, huh? ^_^

Yuri Manga: Comic Yuri Hime (コミック百合姫) September 2012

September 11th, 2012

September’s Comic Yuri Hime (コミック百合姫) starts off with a shock! moment for the characters of Namori’s cover story. This is followed by color page after color page singing the praises of the new Yuru Yuri anime, goods, manga, goods, CDs and goods.

Ohsawa Yayoi’s “Double Bind” was a pretty awesome throwback to the old days of doujinshi by lesbians for a strictly lesbian audience. It has the angst level of of a story by Ang (who, I one day hope to see suddenly pop up out of the woodwork again.) A relationship ends, re-starts and ends once more only to start again, fresh.

“Rock It Girl” comes to a climax, but not the last one. Happily this story will get at least one more, and perhaps a few more chapters after that. I’m so pleased that it hasn’t been cut off just as it’s beginning to get on a roll.

“Love Gene XX” also comes to a climax, as well. Momiji confesses her feelings to Aoi who is suddenly thunderstruck with the obvious about her feelings for Sakura. Aoi runs off to the mountain woods and, as a real thunderstorm starts, Sakura runs off after her. Will Erika-sama be wiling to sacrifice her own fiance’ in order to get revenge against Aoi? Who knows….

Kazuma Kowo’s “Namae ha mada nai” is her very typical play of facial expressions, body language and simple words as a backdrop to a play of emotions that belies the simplicity with which it is presented. Neither we nor the main character understands, yet, what the unnamed honor student has in mind.

Kanana and Shiroyuki are wracked with doubts, but poignant and sweet advice from Sumi and Kinana saves the day in Miyamoto Hisanori’s “Fu~Fu.”

As Fueko and Asuna’s relationship falls apart, we learn about how it began in Amano Syuninta’s “Watashi no Sekhai o Kousei Suru Gomi no You na Nanika”.

Kiss marks are the topic of the day in “Leave Hickey” by Takemiya Jin.

And it looks like Kimiko’s story is coming to a close in Morishima Akiko’s “Renai Joshi Tantei File.”

There are many, many other stories in this volume, tear-jerkers, 4-panel gags and Story A galore, for readers of many interests.

Yuri Novel

Yuri Novelist Fujima Shion’s novel Ikebukuro Fanatic Lolita has been made available for free in Japanese on Google Play: Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4 and Part 5.  And don’t forget to check out Fujima-sensei’s free e-book Yuri Wife. (Also in Japanese.) Her first book is a fantasy romp through the streets of my home away from home when I’m in Tokyo and so, I instantly loved it. It also has intrigue and maid cafes and even a little Yuri. Yuri Wife is in a diary format and is much more realistic. I hope you’ll enjoy them both!

Yuri Manga

Squee! Worry. Squee! Worry. Poor Poor Lips Volume 4 (プアプアLIPS 4) is hitting shelves at the end of October….

Speaking of squee, Himawari-san Volume 3 (ひまわりさん 3) is also on the horizon.

For those of us with an endless urge for moe-fied Maria-sama ripoffs, there’s Nan-sama to Ren (ナン様とレン).

Zenryaku, Yuri no Kuni Yori (前略、百合の園より) Ojou-sama, cool, strict, blah blah, blushes when she something something, Yuri. Sounds same-old same-old, but the title appeals to me. ^_^

Boku no Kanjou ha Onna ga Suki  (僕の彼女は女子が好き) seems, on the face of it, a masterwork of pandering voyeurism.

Tanaka Rin continues to have a Yuri manga included in fashion magazine, commons & sense, number 43.

JManga continues their investment in Yuri with Eiki Eiki and Taishi Zaou’s Haru Natsu Aki Fuyu. This manga is also notable for the utter failure of BL tropes to work in a Yuri setting. In fact, I’ll be writing about that in upcoming days.

Random Yuri News

I’m sorry I hadn’t noticed this before – if you’re a fan of Yuru Yuri, there are some nice wallpapers available for download from the Comic Yuri Hime official site. Scroll down to find them.

Totally keep forgetting to do this. As you know, I consider Nakamura Ching to be a revolutionary manga artist. She puts herself in front of the public and her readers with her work and her honesty. And now, she’s done something almost no one does – she’s uploaded pictures of herself at her book signing on her blog. Get to see the woman behind the manga.

I’m putting this here just to flip you all out. Remember when all the good anime had character song albums? (I have all the Sailor Moon character songs, even the song Ogata Megumi wrote herself for Haruka and they didn’t let her record, instead they went with Initial U.) Well for the three of you who have been waiting for just such an occasion, there is now a Yuri Danshi Character Song CD. Let the full creeping horror of the idea just crawl down the back of your neck, like something Lovecraftian…

And Crunchyroll News points out this kind of amazing Puella Magi Madoka Magica x Yuru Yuri mashup video.

Haru Natsu Aki Fuyu on JManga!

September 7th, 2012

As part of the second wave of Yuri manga from the pages of Comic Yuri Hime, JManga, Ichijinsha and ALC Publishing present Haru Natsu Aki Fuyu by veteran creators of BL and gender-bendy manga Eiki Eiki and Taishi Zaou. This pair is probably best known in the west for Princess Princess (Tokyopop) and Day of the Revolution (DMP).

But, wait, there’s more! JManga has created a very spiffy feature page for the series, with character intros and…I love these…”Famous scenes” with fabulously pulpy headlines. ^_^

This volume is almost half off retail 499 points, rather than 899. These books cost about 900 yen in Japan, so if we count 1 point equal to one standard amount from a country, US folks are paying $4.99 rather than $8.99 or worse, $11.50, which is the market rate for 899 yen right now and what you’d spend to get the print volume from Japan. (Gah)

More Yuri fun on tap – and more in the wings – at JManga!

Yuri Manga: Kuchibiru Tameiki Sakurairo, Volume 2 (くちびるためいきさくらいろ)

September 5th, 2012

We left Nana and Hitomi in Volume 1 of Kuchibiru Tameiki Sakurairo, (くちびるためいきさくらいろ) as a couple and, at least a little aware of the fact that their road will not necessarily be an easy one.

Kuchibiru Tameiki Sakurairo, Volume 2 begins with a step back to them attempting to reset their internal compasses. No man is an island, Donne said – and no couple is, either. In the first few heady months of a new relationship, we tend to cling to our lovers obsessively, because they and only they can understand us. This is typical, but it is dysfunctional. For straight couples, this particular dysfunction is allowable. People smile to see young men and women joined at the hip.

For young women who have not yet broken out of the limited confines of school and family, it can be rather more nerve-wracking. My mother confided in me recently, that she was worried, 30 years ago, that my wife and I were *too* close. Well, of course we were, I replied, all couples are at first. She laughed and agreed and the conversation ended. But I didn’t tell her how terrified I was 30 years ago. Every moment with the woman I loved was torture – we might be discovered, outed, separated, isolated at any second. Nana and Hitomi would understand this feeling.

So Hitomi’s secret is “discovered” by her friend on the basketball team and, in a surprising turn of events, she starts off sympathetic, only to end up being dismissive. And here, at last is what *I* wanted to see. Six years have passed since this story original debuted and many things have changed in the world. Many things – but not the legal and social status of same-sex couples in Japan. How would Morinaga-sensei present this situation?

IMHO, Morinaga-sensei did a great job. Her area of strength is not darkness. Her characters may brood for a while, but in the end they find happiness. Hitomi is required to stand up for her relationship and make a point that is subtle, yet critical. She makes her point and find she now has an ally. Hitomi tells Nana what a relief having someone to talk to is and Nana guesses, correctly, that Abe is a fellow traveler on this particular road. But Abe is not in the same boat at all, and Nana is left without a lifeline. (How I wish there had been some mention of the Internet at this point.)

Then comes the final crisis. I was fascinated to see how this played out. As I say, Morinaga-sensei specializes in handwaves of happiness. Hitomi and Nana manage to have three crises, one between them, which initiates a conversation about gender roles, and two with the outside world, and all of them are sufficiently resolved so that we can just smile and be happy for them.

Here’s the thing, Morinaga-sensei does not do deep social commentary. For her to have addressed things like emotional support, gender roles and family support at all is kind of extraordinary. And I, for one, am pleased that she has. Sure, it’s all a big handwave at the end. But by taking the position of showing how it *ought to be* Morinaga-sensei sets the stage for how it *can* be.

The ending of Kuchibiru Tameiki Sakurairo is how it should – and can – be, if we all make the world work right. ^_^

This collection includes two more of the one-shot stories drawn for Yuri Hime magazine.

I know Morinaga-sensei has moved on to deal with her long-awaited police story, but if she ever wants to revisit Nana and Hitomi, I wouldn’t say no. ^_^
