Yamada to Kase-san, Volume 5 (山田と加瀬さん。)

April 9th, 2026

Two young woman stand before background of colorful cat face silhouettes, cups and toothbrushes. The taller, with dark brown hair wears a brown bear sweat jacket with ears on the hood. The short woman with collar-length blonde hair, wears pink and white stripes sweater and a white cat ear Alice band, as they hold toothbrushes and bathroom cups. There are several extraordinary things about Yamada to Kase-san, Volume 5 (山田と加瀬さん。)  that I want to call out.

First, this series has been one the most persistent works I have ever read. It “should” have ended several times; when Pure Yuri Anthology Hirari was cancelled after a respectable 4 years and when the initial series ended on Web Hirari. Instead of becoming an interesting relic of Yuri history,  Takashima Hiromi-sensei kept drawing.

The Kase-san series moved to the online edition of Wings and then to the print edition of Shinsokan’s flagship magazine. It’s even been the cover series. Kase-san and Yamada graduated, moved to Tokyo are going to college…and now they are living together! This volume makes Takashima-sensei’s 10th volume of the series.  All of this is just…amazing. Not miraculous, though. I believe that Takashima-sensei just works hard at the series and keeps it thriving.

In Volume 5, we turn to Yamada who is living her best life…a little too hard. In her desire to buy beautiful things for her . and Kase-san, she is pushing herself to her limits. This choice ends up hurting Kase-san unintentionally. Thankfully, Yamada realizes that her failure to prioritize her time in the right ways is her own fault and they make up, agreeing to prioritize their time together. It’s almost nice to be annoyed by Yamada for something other than low self-esteem. ^_^

Kase-san and Yamada are entirely relatable than in this volume and there’s no sign of the jealousy from previous volumes, just the small day-to-day adjustments we make as a couple.

So congratulations to Takashima-sensei for this 10th volume of the Kase-san series, which still bears the Hirari comics imprint – which is the last notable thing I wanted to point out. ^_^ Still carrying the Hirari torch, 12 years later. How incredible is that?

Black Lily’s Tale

April 8th, 2026

The title screen of Black Lily's Tale. Two girls in the same blue Japanese sailor-style uniform, with red ties, A girl with collar-length blonde hair is behind a girl with pale long hair. They hold hands over the pale-haired girl's head and to the side.

by Ashley Payne, Okazu Staff Writer.

Stop me if you have heard this before: Hana Sasamori has been friends with Itsuki Oomiya all through high school. A few days before graduation they discover they like each other… NOT the end, as it turns out. Despite a slow start Black Lily’s Tale (available on Steam and Crunchyroll) actually takes some time to address modern issues queer youth have to face, albeit with a vague science-fiction blanket over it.

Black Lily’s Tale has perhaps one of the more roundabout introductions for a game of it’s type. We are introduced to everything with a whole lot of point and click examinations and learning how choices work. In Black Lily’s Tale you have to type in your own choices at the right time rather than wait for the game to give you several possible answers to change the story.

A screenshot of the game Black Lily's Tale with the three central characters Hana Sasamori, Itsuki Oomiya & Aoi Nishiki in contemporary coats over their school uniforms. Hana's line is "He said it was because we made a bulk purchase..."

That said after this brief introduction on how the game will be played, we then have a nearly two hour introduction to the characters and setting where none of that will be relevant. While the actual core characters of Hana, Itsuki and their mutual friend Aoi are all fun people to be with, most of the introduction is bogged down with a lot of sci-fi baggage to what otherwise is a very contemporary story. It doesn’t take long for the Doylist reason for this to become apparent it never stops being odd that of all the names, ‘biophone’ was the name the writers settled on for their smartphone analogues.

A screen shot of Black Lily's Tale with several paragraphs describing Hana Sasamori having to deal with compulsory heterosexuality at her school. Hana wears a grey knit cable sweater jacket over her school uniform and has long, pale hair with a flower on a braid on the left side of her face.

A screenshot of the game Black Lily's Tale with the three central characters Hana Sasamori, Itsuki Oomiya & Aoi Nishiki in dark blue Japanese sailor-syle school unforms with a red tie.. Hana's line is: "Ahaha! No one loves sharks quite like Aoi, huh?"

That said, the real reason for all this exhausting world building is so that they can take what would have otherwise been a ‘story A’ style game and actually address issues like compulsory heterosexuality and conversion therapy. It’s almost elegant until you realise that everything worth talking about in Black Lily’s Tale is happening today, right now. Children are being pressured by compulsory heterosexuality right now. Children are being forced through conversion therapy right now.

A screenshot of the game Black Lily's Tale with Hana Sasamori, who had long pale hair, with a flower on the brain on the left side of her face, confronting Natsu Kakizaki, who has short, boyish cut red hair. Hana is saying: "It doesn't matter if we're both girls! There's nothing wrong with loving someone!"

A chart of the language of flowers. Focusing on flowers beginning with 'A'. Hana is thinking: It'd be nice if the language of flowers gave us some kind of clue towards the answer Ai's looking for...

While Black Lily’s Tale has it’s heart in the right place I can’t help but feel all this was just so they could turn escaping from one of the more traumatic things queer youth suffer from into a game.

A screenshot of the game Black Lily's Tale with Hana Sasamori coming to realise that her feelings have been pathologised. Hana is thinking: Understanding of heterosexuality? Stunted?

Once everything became clear it was nice to see a yuri story in this high school environment that actively takes deliberate effort to explore what current day youth are experiencing. That said it is precisely because this game deals with something that so many queer people have experienced first hand I’d recommend Black Lily’s Tale with a content warning of what it deals with so people can be prepared.

Top-Tier Queer Manga from Manga Mavericks

April 6th, 2026

Disclaimer: I am the Managing Editor for Manga Mavericks and am working as Editor on two of these books. Yes, this is shameless self-promotion. On my blog.  ^_^

This weekend at Anime Boston, Manga Mavericks announced two new titles, and have one more title that I really want everyone to read. So I thought I would just blatantly put on the sandwich board and ring the bell for these titles.

Horon of the Closed Country, Volume 1 by Sen

“It is believed that whatever the Guardian Deity takes will never return….

There is a power that hides and protects an ancient land from foreign enemies, but sacrifices must be made. In recent times, the Harbingers of that Deity have been encroaching on humankind and only people with special powers, Quietists, are able to drive them back. An unlikely trio, each of whom has lost something dear to them, find themselves journeying to unravel the secrets of the Deity and the Quietists. Little do they know that what they have lost, the frequent appearance of the Harbingers, and the need for sacrifices are all connected.”

This story of loss and gain and a god losing it’s grip, and found family is just so lovely.  One of the main characters is agender and another is nonbinary and this is part, but not the point of, the story. Horon is a beautiful and haunting manga by Sen. I hope you all love this as much as I do! Horon, Volume 1 is available now in digital format. If you buy directly from Manga Mavericks, you’ll get a download of a PDF and CBZ files.

I’m editing this, so can recommend it with my whole heart. <3

Next up, this is the first of the license announcements from this past weekend:

Oni & Dawn: Bakumatsu High School Girls, Volume 1, by Hana Ikuta

“Somewhere in Japan, very special students have gathered at Koharu Girls’ High School. What makes them special, you ask?

Sakamoto, Takasugi, Katsura, Katsu, Hijikata, Okita, Kondo…

All these girls possess the souls of the great samurai from the Bakumatsu period! Living as teenage girls with their memories intact, they must navigate modern society, deal with messy historical baggage, and fight for love in a school that forbids romance.”

I told you this was Ikuta-sensei’s year! This story is, as one commenter on social media said, simultaneously L, G, B and T, as the souls of fighters during the Bakumatsu Period are transmuted into high school girls in our present day. And, although romance is not allowed, old feelings linger and new ones form.

I’m not editing this one, but am fannishly delighted, as I really enjoy this series and have reviewed it here on Okazu. All three volumes of this main series are on the way.

Last up, I hope you’ll all run out and get:

Ball & Chain Omnibus, Volume 1 (Volumes 1-2) by Minami Q-ta

Maybe I could have chosen something different…”

Keito is a late-20s company employee who’s planning to get married as a “woman,” despite not feeling cemented into a specific gender or sexuality.

Meanwhile, Aya is a married woman in her 50s who continues playing out the role of “wife” despite being in a marriage that’s long since gone cold.

They both struggle with a gender that was decided upon birth and the “wife” role that became nothing more than a pantomime at some point.

This is a story of two queer people who harbor doubts about how they’ve been treated and shoved into a “normalized” box, and try to take back their true selves.”

I’m editing this manga and holy crow is it relatable. Sexuality and gender are complicated and Minami Q-ta-sensei does a fantastic job of expressing how hard, sometimes, it is to explain to ourselves, much less other people. In their note, Minami-sensei comments that both Aya and Keito are non-binary, which I think becomes clear as the story evolves.

I think this title will be of serious interest to Okazu readers. This is very much a “queer in the real world” story.

Not Yuri, but:

FISHGOD, Volume 1  another title I’ve edited is wacky and fun and…did I say wacky? It’s a great urban fantasy in an alt-now. It’s not queer, but I love it. Laugh out loud silly sometimes, Chlona-sensei has fantastic pacing and character sense.

Lastly, Sinbad, Volume 1 is an action-fantasy inspired by The 1001 Arabian Nights’ tales of Sinbad the Sailor. It’s a great rollicking tale and often quite funny…and sometimes old man funny.(-_-)

I will end this with one important pre-announcement: A very big deal is coming our way. Keep your eyes on Manga Mavericks, and grab some of these extraordinary books asap!

Does It Count If You Lose Your Innocence to An Android?, Streaming on OceanVeil

April 5th, 2026

A purple-haired woman in purple lingerie clings to and tries to kiss a startled woman with red-head in dark purple bra and underwear.Right now, Comic Yuri Hime magazine is running several adult titles and a number of sexually suggestive titles among their serialized works. Most of these have been picked up by Seven Seas, which has released series like My Girlfriend’s Not Here Today  and Asumi-chan Is Interested In Lesbian Brothels. They also are releasing the manga Does It Count If You Lose Your Virginity To An Android, by Yakinikuteishoku, which was adapted into a 9-episode series of anime shorts.

Today we’re taking a look at Does It Count If You Lose Your Innocence to An Android?, streaming on the OceanVeil platform. You will notice obviously that the title is not quite the same as the manga. That happens sometimes when the manga and anime companies don’t or can’t communicate and sometimes when the divisions of the IP owner aren’t in communication. In any case, it is the same story.

Akane works for an electronics company. She’s a hard worker and much admired in the office, but at home she is a disaster. One day she finds a box on her doorstep and surprise! inside is a sexy android, Nadeshiko. Nadeshiko immediately takes up space as Akane’s helpmeet, cleaning cooking and having sex with a reluctant and not sexually knowledgeable Akane. This is all pretty standard “sexy android” territory.

The story hinges, in this early section, on Akane’s unwillingness to top Nadeshiko and therefore (imagine me heavy sighing here) claiming ownership of the android by pressing the right button. Akane is not just a bottom, she’s also really inexperienced and slightly freaked out about having sex with an android, as one might expect. This is also accompanied by a predictable feeling of rejection experienced by Nadeshiko.

Because these episodes are short, sex scenes are pretty quick, without the exaggerated sounds that so marred Shoujo Sect. There is no explicit sex here, but it clear what is supposed to be happening. The result is that this anime is porn-ish. I appreciate that they are covering approximately a whole chapter per 5 minute segment and since the sex scenes are the point of most chapters, the rest of the content does not take long.

I mention that Nadeshiko is Akane’s cleaner, cook and sex partner. When we disparagingly think about the kind of men who tend to desire this, we often put “Mommy” in this list, as a sardonic requirement of what some regressives think of a wifely duties. I did not add that…but this anime does. There is an entire episode where Nadeshiko stands in for “Mommy” and you do you, but I just jumped to the next episode without feeling I had missed anything significant.

It’s not that there is nothing interesting in this story – who sent Nadeshiko and why could be an interesting plot point, but it is mostly background noise and not resolved, even when Akane makes an attempt to find the truth.

If you are already a fan of the manga, these anime shorts will be entertaining. It might also work well as a way to decide if you want to get into this manga in the first place, as it’s a fairly accurate adaptation.

Ratings:

Art – It’s not *bad* but the characters have moe-blob faces which make them look young, ick and all breasts and bodies looks identical. It’s not just the android that is a sex doll.
Story – There are some elements that might be interesting if telling a story was the point…but it’s not.
Characters – Sexy android, disaster office oneesan
Service – 100
Yuri – Akane legit feels weird about falling for an android

Overall – It has a place in the universe, but that place is not on my shelves.

OceanVeil is a weird-ass streaming platform, as well. There’s some 18+ stuff and some teen rated stuff. The GL Category has two choices, both of which are rated NSFW. This, and Aoihana aka Sweet Blue Flowers. Probably for the nudity in the OP. Prudes are so fucking stupid.

You can also watch episodes  of Android Keiken Ninzuu ni Hairimasu ka? ? (アンドロイドは経験人数に入りますか??) in Japanese on YouTube.

Yuri Anime

Let Me Fix You, based on the story by Sakura Kurihara,  the manga of which is being kickstarted by new publisher BluPetal, is getting an anime. ANN’s Alex Mateo has the details.

ANN’s Anita Tai has the news that  Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha EXCEEDS Gun Blaze Vengeance, the 20th anniversary project for the franchise will debut in an hour-long premier in July. I just finished watching Iczer Iczelion, and thought about Nanoha with every nudie transformation sequence. ^_^ Tradition!

On the Okazu Discord, YNN Correspondent Ambi suggested we should watch the promo video for Heroine? Saint? No, I’m an All-Works Maid (and Proud of it!) on Youtube. ANN’s Crystalynn Hodgkins has details on the anime..

Light Novels and Novels

Inori.-sensei has put together a list of all of her works on her Pixiv Fanbox, for folks that are looking past I‘m In Love With The Villainess for more. Links are included for everything, although some works are only available at events. Most are available online and a number include EN licenses.

You remember the movie Thelma and Louise, yes? Starring Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon, it was a story of two woman so tied into a system of patriarchy and oppression that death became their only way out. Many people saw the sapphic potential in it and certainly many women resonated with the way they refused to give in. Well, NHK in Japan has a drama about two 70 year-old women, Teruko and Rui (照子と瑠衣) that is inspired by the movie. In this series, Teruko learns her friend has nowhere to live, and as she is very done with her marriage they set off on a “girl’s trip” which ends up with Teruko and Rui living together under new names. I discovered that this existed through Yuri Novel Bot on X, and have subsequently found that this is also a novel, with a very recognizable cover. ^_^

Via Sr. YNN Correspondent Sean G we have news of Bloody Mary Rules (ブラッディ・メアリは支配する) a novel about “Mary Wales, 15 years old. A beautiful, intelligent, and horribly cruel girl.” This is via Yuri Navi, so I have to assume there is, y’know, Yuri. ^_^

Of all the silly April Fool’s announcements, I want to highlight this extremely silly announcement from Seven Seas, and the even sillier one from Yen Press. ^_^

Other News

Spreading all over the Internet amazingly fast, many people spotted Sailor Moon‘s Artemis the cat overseeing the Artemis II rocket launch this week. We all qvelled. ^_^ Ken Iikura-Gross has the report on ANN.

Anita Tai has the details of Global Bookwalker‘s relaunch on ANN, now that it has been split off from Bookwalker JP (and thus, removing its greatest utility.) They launched with some significant problems…including having marked all Yuri, no matter the reading age, as “mature.” Go and transfer your account, but hold their feet to the fire on this. It very much looks like they did no testing before launch. If you can’t see your purchases, look in the “mature tab” then let them know it is not acceptable. For once in my life I wrote an angry email….there was no reason for that “mistake” except laziness . It’s 2026 manga companies, get with the times.

Not Yuri, but gay comedy anime Go For It, Nakamura-kun! will be on Crunchyroll and ANN’s Alex Mateo has the news that it will be getting a simuldub.
