Light Novel: R.O.D., Volume 8

March 6th, 2012

When we left Yomiko at the end of Volume 6 (before the unrelated romp that was Volume 7), she was imprisoned by Dokusensha and we had no idea what had happened to Nancy at all.

At the beginning of R.O.D., Volume 8, all is made clear.

Yomiko is indeed imprisoned by Dokusensha, but is released from her cage to have dinner with Ou-En and the woman who heads Dokusensha, who goes by the name “China.” China looks like a little girl, but is as old as Gentleman himself…indeed, she tells Yomiko that she was Gentleman’s wife, back in the ancient past when humans were first roaming the savannah of Africa. She tells Yomiko a history of humanity that, while compelling, is completely at odds with all written and fossil records. China agrees and explains that those have been faked in order to disguise the truth.

Meanwhile, Nancy has been imprisoned in a submarine deep in the ocean, to keep her from escaping  – if she should phase out of her bonds, there is quite literally nowhere to go – the water pressure would crush her before she could make it to land. She is not fed, has nothing to drink, is hung uncomfortably from her arms and is in her underwear, so she is cold. She is not allowed to sleep, either.

China takes Yomiko on a tour of the Dokusensha Library, which fills the cavity of a mountain. China speaks plainly to Yomiko, and asks her to join Dokusensha. Yomiko thanks her for the offer, but refuses. And repeatedly, politely, she asks after Nancy.

Yomiko is sent back to a nice room, rather than a cage, where Ou-En brings her books to read (and remains there, while she does, since he can neutralize her paper-user skills.) She is then visited by Faust who gives her a copy of the book Donny was reading when she first met him. He asks her again to marry him and when she refuses, declares that she is his enemy. The next time they meet, he says, he will kill her.

In the meantime, back in London, Wendy returns back to her apartment to find Nenene in near hysteria. Nenene tells her a horrific story about how she killed a man that day. Crying, shaking, Nenene recounts how a thief broke in to the apartment, and she killed him, then dragged his body to the dumpster in the back. Calmly, Wendy insists they go to the police. Nenene gets even more hysterical crying, and confesses that it was a lie…she needed to know how honest Wendy was. The two women hold each other for a bit until Nenene pulls herself together and admits that, while they were in Yomiko’s, Donny’s, apartment in Tokyo, she found Donny’s diary. She hasn’t read it, but she feels that she needed advice about what to do with it. Wendy, obviously, can be trusted, and so the two put their heads together.

Drake meets up with and puts together a squad to carry out a secret mission….

In the British Library, Joker, who has not heard from Yomiko or Nancy in days, is told that he needs to look at the satellite feed. Somewhere in China, a mountain is erupting with paper flowers.

Nancy is at her limit. Cold, hungry, thirsty, exhausted, she knows she doesn’t have much more left. When an enemy submarine approaches, the captain orders a torpedo to be shot at the other sub, and she sees her chance. Nancy phases out of her bonds and into the torpedo, where she comes within about 100 meters of the other sub. She moves through the water as quickly as possible and falls from the ceiling onto the captain of the British submarine Victorious, in front of Drake.

Wendy and Nenene board a plane for China, determined to find Yomiko and give her the diary.

Yomiko takes the book Faust gave her, sends up the paper flower signal for Joker to see where Dokusensha HQ is and escapes on a paper airplane…but not alone. She steals China, as well. With the help of a mysterious dragon that appears, Yomiko fights off China’s bodyguards  (five odious sisters, who I really could have done without.) China and Yomiko spend the night in a dark forest, while Yomiko tries to convince China to return to England with her. China rejects the offer, but asks Yomiko to take her somewhere before returning her to Dokusensha.

In front of a statue, Ou-En and Faust meet and Ou-En confirms that Faust has given a piece of the Guttenberg paper to Yomiko. Ou-En lifts the book he holds to destroy Faust where he stands….

And in China’s Forbidden City, Gentleman stands and inhales, remembering that nostalgic scent of dust.

The Epilogue is a short entry from Donny Nakajima’s Diary, describing the day he met Yomiko Readman.

Well hot damn, that was a book full of book. ^_^

While at MangaNEXT, Sean Gaffney asked me if the novel Joker and Wendy were evil or good Joker and Wendy and I had to say that, at the moment, they were neither. What we’ve seen of Wendy up until now is entirely admirable and Joker is ambiguous to the point of being a non-entity.

Unfortunately for us, Yomiko’s aerial battle was somewhat ruined by the annoying sisters who were her enemy. A good fight needs a good enemy and these were not. They were tedious in the extreme. To make up for it, however, Nancy’s escape was extra wonderful. And of course Yomiko’s stylish signal to Joker was special, as well.

But…I find myself waiting impatiently for Nenene and Yomiko to reunite. ^_^

Ratings:

Art – 4
Story – 7 If the Bodyguard sisters hadn’t been so tedious, it might have made an 8
Characters – 7 Where the sisters were awful, China’s about a zillion times more interesting than Gentleman to date. C.p., “need a good bad guy…”
Yuri – 0
Service – 6 Of course Nancy’s in her underwear. And we have to mention that every single time and make sure we have a picture of it. Snooze.

Overall – 8

I’m really looking forward to Volume 9. ^_^

A Certain Scientific Railgun Manga, Volume 3 (English)

March 5th, 2012

In Volume 3 of A Certain Scientific Railgun, the Level Upper Arc comes to a crashing conclusion in which tears are freely shed by many characters and by at least one reader.

Yes, even though I knew what was coming, by virtue of having read this series in Japanese and seen the anime, I bawled at Kiyama-sensei’s horrific backstory, and again when Saten was revived. In Volume 3, we get to see the strength of all three of our protagonists. Kuroko’s tactical mastery, Uiharu’s’s strategic skills and Mikoto’s sheer psychic strength, all in order to save their dear friend and the others, both good and bad, who have fallen victim to the Level Upper.

If the manga stopped here, as the anime did, I’d still consider it worth reading. This was an exceedingly entertaining arc, with pathos, nobility, friendship and even humor (although of all things in the series, it’s weakest at humor.)

Yuri ups a bit with a short side-story that quite specifically follows Kuroko and Mikoto and their relationship. It was this story that made me believe that Kuroko’s feelings for Mikoto are actually quite sincere, in fact.

There’s nothing new to say about this series, except that you should definitely give Volumes 1-3 a try and see what you think. It gets even darker and, IMHO, somewhat less satisfying from this point on  – purely because it  is less about the girls as a group and more about Mikoto as an individual. If the intersection of magic and science appeals to you, however and you like watching female characters with great psychic powers and little temporal power, by all means continue reading this series. I have no doubt that Seven Seas will continue to produce a fine translation, whether I review it or not.

The End of GUNJO (羣青)

March 4th, 2012

I finally had a chance to read the final chapter of GUNJO, in the March issue of IKKI magazine.

I do not know what to say about it, really. It left me quite literally gasping for air. I sat there and panted for about two minutes, as I stared at the last page.

The ending was not what I feared it might be, it was not what I hoped it might be. It was infinitely better than I imagined, both happier and sadder that I expected. It contained something I wished desperately for and never truly believed could happen.

If you too have read it, please feel free to tell me your impressions in the comments. No spoilers, please. I do not wish to ruin anyone’s experience of the ending.

The third and final volume of Gunjo will be slightly delayed. According to her Twitter feed, Nakamura-sensei entered the hospital recently and, while she is back home recovering, her work will be slowed or suspended for some time until she is feeling better. I know I am not alone in wishing her a speedy recovery.

「羣青」ありがとうございます。Thank you, Sensei, for GUNJO.

It’s been a hell of a ride.

Yuri Network News – March 3, 2012

March 3rd, 2012

Happy Hinamatsuri!

Snatches of Yuri

The second Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha movie trailer is streaming for your squeeing. I cannot express how much I am looking forward to Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha A’s 2nd. On the topic of Nanoha, if I had $300 I could afford to throw away, I would so buy this.

Queen’s Blade is streaming special introductions to the new characters on their Queen’s Blade Rebellion website.

You probably all saw this while I was at MangaNEXT, but a completely new R.O.D. series, Read or Die Rehabilitation is in the works. This is not an alternate universe, it’s a completely different story, that promises to be darker than the original. As the original manga and novels were quite dark, I’m concerned that this may be “torture the characters instead of have a plot” territory. Of all the R.O.D. properties, the original manga was probably the weakest. On the other hand, Read or Dream turned out pretty decent, so I’ll keep expectations at a minimum and judge it when I see it. ^_^

Shinyuu to Watashi no Sukina Hito (心友と私のスキな人) sounds like a somewhat frustrating relationship between two girls who are super close until one falls for a guy. I’m told that the end is a happy one (for us.) It ran in Sho-Comi magazine, so anything is possible.

Centaur no Ayami (セントールの悩み) Volume 2, goes off the charts with Centaur Yuri. I just don’t know if I can bring myself to read this. I much prefer to to not ever think of centaurs in middle school, much less having sexual relations.

Hinata Cafe Youkoso (ひなたCafeへようこそ) is getting high Yuri scores from blogs I disagree with. I’m not seeing pandering dressing-undressing scenes as “Yuri” but perhaps it’s another girl leering or something. Whatever.

Continuing whatever Paperweight Ai 1 started, Paperweight Ai 2 (ペーパーウエイト アイ 2) continues. At least one story is by Sakamoto Mono, a Comic Yuri Hime contributor.

Yuri Manga artist Tanaka Rin has another Yuri comic running in fashion magazine commons&sense ISSUE42 GENTLE

And good news for me at least, Kimi no Tamenara Shineru (姫のためなら死ねる), Volume 2 will be hitting the shelves in April. I’ll get you a link as soon as possible, so you can not miss the wacky adventures of slacker Sei Shonagon and Murasaki Shikibu.

That wraps it up for this week.

Black Rock Shooter Anime ( ブラック★ロックシューター )

March 3rd, 2012

You know what you probably shouldn’t do? Watch 3 episodes of the Black Rock Shooter ( ブラック★ロックシューター ) anime in a row. Phew, that was depressing!

The short description of the Black Rock Shooter anime is that it is an extended version of the Black Rock Shooter OVA, with extended cast, as well.

Middle schooler Mato befriends the slightly aloof and obviously alienated Yomi, only to learn that Yomi is bound by guilt and manipulation to another girl, Kagari. Mato refuses to take no for an answer, and is able to befriend Yomi, despite all attempts to keep them apart.

In the game world that reflects their inner lives, Black Rock Shooter (Mato’s avatar) is able to free Dead Master (Yomi) by defeating Chariot (Kagari.) But their happiness is short-lived. Saya, an adult who is meant to be counseling the students in their school, is not-at-all-subtly manipulating them….and causing a great deal of emotional damage as she does. We don’t yet know why, but we can see that she knows perfectly well what she is doing.

The game world reflects the real world in that Black Rock Shooter continues to attempt to free Dead Master from her chains and her misery. Now that Chariot is gone, although Kagari is not, it appears that Black Gold Saw (who is clearly going to be Kohata, Mato’s sempai on the basketball team) and Strength (Mato’s childhood friend Yu, because duh~) will continue to oppose Black Rock Shooter in the game world.

Update: March 4, after watching episode 5. Kohata was no more than a minion. So, I agree that Saya is BGS, but I’m still holding on to Yu for Strength.

If you liked Madoka‘s “real” world/alternate world concept, you’ll find Black Rock Shooter a comfortable fit. The game world is an almost Jungian shared consciousness, where the rules are known, but not inviolable. The problem here of course is Saya. She’s pulling the strings for maximum angst and, as of yet, we don’t know why.

If I were to find a single complaint, it’s that the animation of the both “real” world and game world are not as high quality as I hoped, but I’m inclined to think that that is Nico Nico Douga’s fault, not the anime and that in Blu-Ray, the game scenes would be nausea-inducingly crisp. The subtitles are fine enough that if there are issues, I can’t think of any right now, so I’m inclined to say they are fine.

In the fine tradition of Nadesico characters from Shiroi Heya no Futari‘s Simone on, Yomi/Dead Master desperately needs rescuing – from herself, mostly. I’m content to wait it out and see if Mato/Black Rock Shooter can do it…and how.

Ratings:

Art – 6, but I bet when I see it in high def, that bumps up
Story – 7 ARRRGGGGGHHHHHHH, so annoying……
Characters – 7
Yuri – 2, but all Yuri Goggles at the moment
Service – You know, it worries me that there’s someone out there who actually enjoys the idea of the emotional torture of 2-dimensional characters for itself

Overall – 7

Good, but oh god, Episode 4 was depressing…..
